From weaver.646 at osu.edu Wed Oct 1 08:54:30 2025 From: weaver.646 at osu.edu (Weaver, Tyler) Date: Wed, 1 Oct 2025 12:54:30 +0000 Subject: [Prep Lab Students] October Reminders & Updates Message-ID: Hi Everyone, A few reminders and updates to share: Consumables We?re still noticing that the quantities of consumables being set out don?t always match what?s listed on the checklist, especially with test tubes and Pasteur pipets. Please condense boxes whenever possible to keep the correct quantity available. If you can?t condense, do not put out a new box yet. Complete Tasks on Time If you are assigned an unlocking/locking or lab readiness check, please be upstairs and beginning your task by the listed start time. Unlock the labs first, then move on to checking items off your list. Delays in unlocking the labs cause delays for students starting their work. Vacuuming Starting tomorrow, a new task will be added to the Daily Sheets: vacuuming labs using the red backpack vacuum. We?ve noticed a buildup of dust bunnies, and this should help. When assigned, put a fresh battery in the vacuum, go to the assigned lab(s), and run the vacuum around the bases of cabinets, desks, and other areas where dust tends to collect. Prep Lab Closed on 10/16 and 10/17 The prep lab will be closed on October 16th and 17th for fall break. It had spread across the floor in front of Hood B and was running down the wall. I?ve attached a few photos for reference. We?re not 100% sure what the material was or how long it had been there. I want to emphasize?spills happen, and I?m not upset that a spill occurred. What matters is how we respond. If you ever have a spill, please do one of the following immediately: clean it up, ask for help with cleanup, or notify my team so we can address it or contact EHS for assistance. Leaving a spill behind creates unnecessary hazards and can make cleanup more difficult, especially if the material reacts with paint, flooring, wax, or cabinetry. We?ve also noticed significant yellow staining along the floor under the balances. This may be the result of lead nitrate and potassium iodide solids being spilled or brushed onto the floor and reacting. Please remember: any solids spilled in the balance areas should be swept up and disposed of in the class chemical waste beaker. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss. Let?s hope Week 7 is similar. Here?s what we?ve got planned: [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please see the Week 6 Edition for details on CYC and CLK. STR This is one of my favorites! Students should try to keep their samples under the snorkels as much as possible. This will help immensely with the odor in the room. The waste will be disposed of in the white can (Chemical Waste container) in Hood B. LLT Blue square carboys of 0.44 M NaOH will be swapped out during the lab readiness checks by those completing them. When swapping out the blue carboys, check the fill level of the spill tray. Let us know if it?s more than half full. Partially filled bottles of lemon and lime juice should be placed in the fridge. We will periodically combine these. When doing a gather, please check the fridge first for full bottles of lemon and lime juice. If you need more than what is available in the fridge, please grab new bottles from aisle 28. No partial bottles of lemon or lime juice should be left in aisle 28. LCP Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead students should use an empty beaker from their drawer. At least one glove should be removed when walking through the hallway. If students are in the hallway with two gloved hands, please gently ask them to remove one glove. Additional commentary is not necessary. IHT Cups and lids will be in the red dispensers by the balances. We?re going to use quite a few weigh boats, cup and lids- so be sure to keep a close eye on these. Additional cups and lids are available in the same cabinet as the 15-mL Falcon tubes- this is the cabinet under the balances closest to Hood A. MGB Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Sarah and Emma have replacement parts in both windows if needed. Other Information Week of Fall Break We will run our normal schedule on October 13th through October 15th. We still have lab scheduled for October 13th. October 16th and 17th are Fall Break; the prep lab will be closed. Gather Sheets Gather sheets should be left with a gather after the gather is completed. Once a cart check or cart change is completed, the gather sheet should be thrown away. At that point it been with the chemicals and I would prefer it does not come back into the office. Returning Keys We've had way too many instances of keys not being returned after use. You are responsible for any keys you take out of Keyth for the duration they are checked out. This includes if you hand them off to someone. Please return keys back to Keyth as soon as you are done with them. Reagent Caps Anytime you are doing a gather, cart check, cart change, lab readiness check, etc. please be sure you are briefly checking for broken or missing caps. We have replacement caps on the end of aisle 27/27. Rando Wash Bottles When collecting abandoned equipment from the sink areas and hoods, please be sure to also grab any wash bottles that have been abandoned. Some hoods recently had three or more in them. Cart Reagents Please be sure the reagent bottles on the carts are standing upright and labels are facing forward. As mentioned earlier, you should also be checking that all caps are intact and closed. If solids are supposed to be provided with a scoop, straw, or forceps, please be sure those are also present. To advance this priority, every year Ohio State requires all employees and students to complete online training focused on recognizing, preventing and reporting sexual misconduct, and on assisting those who might have experienced sexual misconduct. As an Ohio State employee, you have been assigned an easy-to-follow, interactive module called STEP UP Against Sexual Misconduct. You can find the course in your BuckeyeLearn transcript. Merit-eligible employees who do not complete STEP UP training by April 24, 2026, will not be eligible for annual merit increases that take effect September 2026. Student employees, graduate associates and other employees who are not classified as merit-eligible may be subject to unit-specific consequences for non-completion. Bargaining unit employees should follow their applicable collective bargaining agreements. If at any time you are unable to complete the training (for example, if the content brings up past trauma), instructions for an alternative format can be requested here. All such requests must be made prior to the deadline for completion. You can also email civilrightseducation at osu.edu with questions or concerns. * To access your module, log in to the BuckeyeLearn system at buckeyelearn.osu.edu with your Ohio State credentials. * Then select the ?My Transcript? button on the BuckeyeLearn homepage and click the ?Launch? button. How scary! Also, today is Jay?s birthday- so if you see him on Monday, please wish him happy birthday. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please see the Week 9 edition for information on Experiments IHT and SAL. CAR TAs will be picking up glucose test strips from the windows. These are light and moisture sensitive and are kept in the desiccators on the bench within the lab support window. To open the desiccator, unlatch the three latches and swing the door open. Do the reverse to close the desiccator. The glucose test strips are expensive, so we WILL accept unused strips back. Please place these back into the desiccator in the pink ?EXTRAS? bog. These should only be handed out if extras are needed. Never give a TA a partial set. They should be picking up a full class set at the beginning of the lab session. EMS These will be set up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. The power supplies and discharge tubes are new, but the spectrometers are the same. SST If a lab indicates they don?t have enough meters and probes, be sure they are planning to work in pairs. pH meters, probes, and cables to connect the two, are on the bench closest to Hood A. There could be a few rooms with old (black cable) probes, most rooms will have new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new white wire probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the white wire. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning (BNC type). Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues, please review it. It will be available in the window. XUF Day 1 Students will NOT be running XRF analysis on their pennies. Instead, XRF results are on the sticker attached to each bagged penny. Hazardous gas will be produced when the penny dissolves. If the exhaust stops working the lab room and the neighboring room must be evacuated. SYN Day 1 Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. There is no scoop provided, students should just use an empty beaker from their drawer. Emma, Sarah, and/or Tyler will manage the microwave. Note that concentrated phosphoric acid is not needed for Day 1 and will not be provided. Each room will have a microscope. We will snag a tiny amount of sample from the first group to obtain crude product to put under the microscope. If students observe the temperature on the digital readout going down as they heat up their melting point apparatus, they plugged the thermocouple in the wrong way. They just need to remove it, turn it 180? and reinsert it. Replacement thermocouples will also be available in the window. Each room is limited to only 6 groups due to the layout in the microwave. If a room asks for more reaction tubes, please check they don?t have more than 6 groups before handing anything out. Any questions you cannot answer should be directed to Tyler. Other Information Shift Switches We understand that sometimes you?ll need to miss a shift for a planned schedule conflict. If this happens, please first message the GroupMe to see if anyone can cover your shift. Hopefully, someone is willing to do so. It is common to not get a response if you ask about shifts in the distant future. We recommend asking about a week out. Once you have someone to cover your shift, you must send an email to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu to notify us of the switch. You should cc the person that is covering your shift to keep them in the loop. While we do keep an eye on the GroupMe messages; unless you email us, the switch is not official. Reagent Requests When someone requests a reagent from the window, be sure to find out what room they are from, what concentration is needed, and what size container is needed. Some experiments use the same reagent in different concentrations or bottle sizes. Having this info will make it easier for us to respond to the request quickly. General Chemistry Prep Lab ?
