The final week of lab us upon us! We’re in the home stretch!

Experimental Details

Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Remember, students that missed BLP will be making up BLP. 1220 students that missed any other experiment will be doing pKa.

SCM

This is like a watered-down (pun intended) version of MSR with more sig-figs. You’re probably going to need to replace pipets, burets, and pipet pumps.

pKa

This is essentially WST with different steps and reagent labels. This experiment is done individually. pH meters and probes will be on the bench closest to Hood A.

Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning. Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings.

If a student claims their pH meter is “broken”, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues. It will be available in the window for reference.
BLP

This changed over the summer. There are two unknowns per TA: packaged solids in a black bag and packaged solids in a clear bag. You will NOT be passing out printed copies of the BLP lab manual pages. If someone needs notebook paper, they should be given the graph paper we have in the black paper organizer.

There will be glassware setup on the bench beside Hood A. Do not remove this glassware.

MSR

We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them or are leaking in the designated bin- we may be able to salvage them.

Other Information
Spring 2026 Schedule

The spring 2026 schedule was released last week. If you have not yet selected your hours for spring, please do so ASAP. If you are not planning to return for the spring, or even considering it, please let Tyler know ASAP. Friday needs some love... If you can move your shift from Monday-Thursday over to Friday, let’s talk.

Cart Changes and Lab Readiness Checks


Two rooms were missing all bottles of one reagent for VOL. This should have been caught by the people that did the cart change and should have also been caught by the person assigned to the lab readiness check. The lab readiness check is our last chance to find issues before they can impact the students. The form that was completed for this lab readiness check indicated all reagents were present and full.


Security


We’ve been seeing doors left unlocked in spaces that are unattended. Please be sure you are locking up behind you if nobody is around. Leaving labs unlocked because waste is being collected soon is not acceptable. If you want to leave the door unlocked, you need to stay in the window.


Conversations


Please remember to keep conversations in the office and in the build workplace appropriate and respectful. We’ve overheard some conversations in the past few weeks that should probably not be had in the building.


Shifts for the Remainder of the Semester


Our final week of General Chemistry lab meets the week after Thanksgiving. We’ll hold all regularly scheduled shifts through Reading Day. That afternoon, we’ll have a small party, and then we’ll schedule separate shifts for finals week. Everyone will be asked to work a set number of hours during finals.
