From weaver.646 at osu.edu Sun Nov 2 13:39:08 2025 From: weaver.646 at osu.edu (Weaver, Tyler) Date: Sun, 2 Nov 2025 18:39:08 +0000 Subject: [Prep Lab Students] Autumn 2025- Week 11 Message-ID: The Weekly Mix Volume: Autumn 2025 | Edition: Week 11 Schedule Somehow it?s already the first week of November! Here?s what we?ve got planned: [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please see the Week 10 Edition for details on EMS and SST. SGR The TAs will pick up candies from the lab support window, these will be on the unknown shelf. Students will need to use the carboy of distilled water in the lab for this one. If the students need to re-smash their candies, they can do so by gently tapping the candy with an iron ring while the candy is resting on a silicone trivet. Be prepared to pass out replacement 50-mL volumetric flasks. QUL We?re expecting to go through more than 25,000 microcentrifuge tubes this week. All rooms have a significant stash of 1.7 mL microcentrifuge tubes behind their marker boards. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if they report one is not working, check the following: it?s plugged in, turned on, and the lid is fully closed. If it still doesn?t work, trade it with one of the extras in the window. Place a broken item sticker on the faulty unit. When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bin of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it takes too long. WST If a lab indicates they don?t have enough meters and probes, be sure they are planning to work in pairs. pH meters, probes, and cables to connect the two, are on the bench closest to Hood A. There could be a few rooms with old (black cable) probes, most rooms will have new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new white wire probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the white wire. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning (BNC type). Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues, please review it. It will be available in the window. XUF Day 2 We will be moving a large instrument into Hood A of 350. A tank of acetylene will also be clamped to the bench near this hood. While the instrument is in this hood, the orange bucket will temporarily be placed under Hood A. SYN Day 2 Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. There is no scoop provided; students should just use an empty beaker from their drawer. Extra white pea size stir bars and vacuum tubing will be available in the window. Concentrated phosphoric acid is used for Day 2 and will be provided in Hood A. Each room will have a microscope. We will snag a tiny amount of sample from the first group to obtain crude product to put under the microscope. If the microscope says it?s not connected, you need to go into the tablet wifi settings and connect to the option that starts with M. If it asks for a password, it?s just 12345678. Any questions you cannot answer should be directed to me. Other Information One-A-Days Beginning this week, we will be more attentive to students that are not completing one-a-days when they should. The list on the board has been lacking, even on the days we actually had one-a-days. Please be sure you are completing your obligations. General Chemistry Prep Lab ? This may have an impact on when cart changes and new cart gathers are scheduled. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please see the Week 11 edition for details on QUL and WST. ECE Students will be using 6-sided dice for the first part of this experiment. If they need more, there should be a supply in the window. Ice will also be needed; if you notice students wearing gloves on both hands, please nicely ask them to remove one glove. No additional commentary is needed. Please be polite- they?re still learning. MGB Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in both windows if needed. BLP This changed over the summer. There are two unknowns per TA: packaged solids in a black bag and packaged solids in a clear bag. You will NOT be passing out printed copies of the BLP lab manual pages. If someone needs notebook paper, they should be given the graph paper we have in the black paper organizer. There will be glassware setup on the bench beside Hood A. Do not remove this glassware. HCAL Students and TAs have been instructed to use a program called Graphical Analysis. It can be downloaded from go.osu.edu/graphicalanalysis. GoTemp! Probes are on the reagent cart. USB adapters are also available on the reagent cart, if needed. Sarah, Emma, or I will take care of the unknown environment which will be setup in Hood A. Remember that new experiments will start on Wednesdays now. [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Please the Week 12 edition for details on ECE, MGB, BLP, and HCAL. NAP This is a new one that Sarah has been working on. Students will be working in pairs or groups of three. Equipment needed will be on the bench beside hood A. We?ll be using vortex mixers, which are new to 1110. To activate the mixer, students just need to press their centrifuge tube down into the top cone. It will turn off when pressure is released. Waste is as expected, liquids and chemical solids go in the white can, rinsed plastic tubes in the blue bucket. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. We?ve switched to generic Alka-Seltzer. Essentially, the white tablets are Alka-Seltzer and the colored tablets are antacid. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A. VOL This one has A LOT of equipment and solutions. Students will be using the multimeter kits which are on the bench beside Hood A. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the broken part for one of the replacements in the window. Emma has made a guide on what to do with these. Please read it. The provided electrode kit is to be used for both Parts A and B. One magnetic stir bar is provided in the kit to help distinguish between iron and zinc electrodes. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off the electrodes with emery paper/cloth. This should be done on the provided cover stock; the cover stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Each room has been provided with 7 trays since they only have 7 snorkels. We will not provide more. Students should not be sanding directly on the lab bench. Doing this makes me sad :( There?s a ton of waste for this experiment. Liquids should be discarded in the chemical waste beakers (white can). Contaminated paper, including spent emery paper, should go in the blue bucket. Spent electrodes should be collected in the canister in the window. Spent porous cups and Pasteur pipets should be discarded in the orange bucket. SAT A carboy of saturated calcium hydroxide will be stirring on the bench beside Hood A. This should last all week, but MJ will have a backup ready in the prep lab just to be safe. Students will be gravity filtering solution through P4 filter paper and a long stem funnel. This is 1910?s first titration lab, be prepared to hand out burets, pipets, and pipet pumps. Other Information Spring 2026 Schedule The spring 2026 schedule is now available in Teams. Please look at the week of January 5th. Remember, shifts must be two hours (four blocks) long, and you cannot have more than 8 hours (16 blocks) scheduled in a single day. Everyone is required to schedule at least 12 hours per week; exceptions must be approved my Tyler in advance. Note that we only have one night lab, on Tuesday, but it will use both floors. Leaving the Prep Lab After this Semester? If you know you know you are, or are considering, leaving the Prep Lab at the end of this semester, please let Tyler know ASAP. General Chemistry Prep Lab ? So? -We?ll be putting out 2 L waste beakers in the second floor hoods. -Each hood on the second floor should have a 4th bottle of NaOH. -All rooms have a third white can under the hood. If you do a waste run and take three cans from one room, replace the third can that was taken from under the hood. Think of this as a practice run for VOL in the spring. We?re in the home stretch! [image.png] Experimental Details Review the window notes and any associated equipment guides for additional details. Remember, students that missed BLP will be making up BLP. 1220 students that missed any other experiment will be doing pKa. SCM This is like a watered-down (pun intended) version of MSR with more sig-figs. You?re probably going to need to replace pipets, burets, and pipet pumps. pKa This is essentially WST with different steps and reagent labels. This experiment is done individually. pH meters and probes will be on the bench closest to Hood A. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning. If someone needs notebook paper, they should be given the graph paper we have in the black paper organizer. There will be glassware setup on the bench beside Hood A. Do not remove this glassware. MSR We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them or are leaking in the designated bin- we may be able to salvage them.
