Emails sent to preplabstudents at lists.osu.edu are archived for your convenience at https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/ Hi there! We?ve only got Week 9 between us and spring break! Here?s what we need to tackle: [cid:image001.png at 01DB8836.47126140] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see my Week 8 email for notes on PPG and SAL. SGR Strawberry Jolly Ranchers are no longer manufactured, we have included red lifesavers in some sets of candies as a substitute. You may get questions about this. The TAs will pick up candies from the window, these will be on the unknown shelf. Students will need to use the carboy of distilled water in the lab for this one- please check the level in the carboy when you are doing your readiness checks. If it looks low, let us know. If the students need to re-smash their candies, they can do so by gently tapping the candy with an iron ring while the candy is resting on a silicone trivet. Be prepared to pass out replacement 50-mL volumetric flasks. EMS These will be set up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. SST This experiment will be done in pairs this semester and moving forward. If a lab indicates they don?t have enough meters and probes, be sure they are planning to work in pairs. Students and pH meters don?t always get along. The lab supervisors and prep lab have made significant efforts to help this. pH meters, probes, and cables to connect the two, are on the bench closest to Hood A. There will be a few rooms with a mix of old (black cable), most rooms will have new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the supplied white cables. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning (BNC type). Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues. It will be available in the window. HCAL The lab manual asks the students to download and use a program called LoggerLite. This is no longer available. Students and TAs have been instructed to use a program called Graphical Analysis. It can be downloaded from go.osu.edu/graphicalanalysis. GoTemp! Probes are in the lab in a drawer under the oven. USB adapters are also available in this drawer, if needed. Sarah, Emma, or I will take care of the unknown environment which will be setup in Hood A. CLK This one tends to either be quick or take the whole lab session. Flip thermometers, timers, and rulers are all in the student drawers. Extra thermometers and replacement batteries will be in the window. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. Keep a close eye on your spill kits and request replacements as needed. Other Important Information Summer Hours! Anyone that is interested in working in the prep lab over the summer should let me know in the coming weeks. We have lab only one day a week this summer, Tuesdays 8:30am-11:25pm and 12:00pm-2:55pm, but will be open all week. Leaving the Prep Lab? Anyone that will be graduating or leaving their position in the Prep Lab for any reason after the end of spring semester should let me know as soon as possible. This will help me plan staffing for fall semester. March is Workplace Eye Wellness Awareness Month! In celebration of this, we have hidden 5 goggle emojis around our spaces. If you can locate all 5, fill out one of the pink quarter sheets of paper on the Daily Sheet cabinet with their location and what eye protection should be used in that area. Submit the sheet to any Prep Lab Staff member and earn a full-size candy bar! Please don?t share this information with others, this is also partially intended to be a reward for reading my Sunday emails. Only valid 03/03/25-03/31/25 while supplies last. Void where prohibited. This can be done via the people at the window, a text or call to my cell (614-906-0439), GroupMe, Teams message or call to my office number (614-688-3929) which forwards to my cell. If the people have a legitimate reason to be in the space, and don?t have PPE, we have been asked to provide it. It would be helpful if you determine their lab coat size when you initially see them, so that info can be communicated when I am notified. We keep goggles and lab coats in aisle 25. Used lab coats should be discarded in the beige trash can at the end of aisle 25 by the shower. Emails sent to preplabstudents at lists.osu.edu are archived for your convenience at https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/ Greetings! We hope you had a safe and restful spring break. Time to jump back into it! The schedule for next week is below: [cid:image003.png at 01DB8C35.A46D1850] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see the Week 9 email for notes on SGR and SST. CAR TAs will be picking up glucose test strips from the windows. These are light and moisture sensitive and are kept in the desiccators on the bench within the lab support window. To open the desiccator, unlatch the three latches and swing the door open. Do the reverse to close the desiccator. The glucose test strips are expensive, so we WILL accept unused strips back. Please place these back into the desiccator in the pink ?EXTRAS? bog. These should only be handed out if extras are needed. Never give a TA a partial set. They should be picking up a full class set at the beginning of the lab session. IHT Materials will be available on the reagent cart or on the bench beside hood A. Cups and lids will be in the red dispensers by the balances. We?re going to use quite a few weigh boats, cup and lids- so be sure to keep a close eye on these. QUL We?re expecting to go through more than 25,000 microcentrifuge tubes this week. All rooms have a significant stash of 1.7 mL microcentrifuge tubes behind their marker boards. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if they report one is not working, check the following: it?s plugged in, turned on, and the lid is fully closed. If it still doesn?t work, trade it with one of the extras in the window. Place a broken item sticker on the faulty unit. When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bin of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it takes too long. WST This experiment will be done in pairs this semester and moving forward. pH meters and probes are still on the bench closest to Hood A. There will be some rooms with a mix of old (black cable) and new (white cable) probes, and some rooms with only new (white cable) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the supplied white cables. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning. It will be available in the window for reference. BAR The spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room on both floors. They use the same power cord as the hot plates. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the bench next to Hood A. These items should be returned after use. Be prepared to replace volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken. As a reminder, if any pipet pumps with glass stuck in them (or ?leaky? pipet pumps) are returned to the window, please put them in the appropriate labeled bin. Emma and Sarah will have a ?broken UV-Vis? cart. Please place any broken UV-Vis on this cart. As always with anything broken, please put a broken item sticker on it. BLP There are three unknowns per TA: one green liquid in falcon tubes, packaged solids in a black bag, and packaged solids in a clear colorless bag. We have packed all of these into white ?chicken? boxes. TAs just need a single box. They don?t have to return the emptied box- if they do, just make a stack of collapsed boxes. You?ll also be passing out printed copies of the BLP lab manual pages. Other Important Information Keyth 2.0 (FINALLY) It?s taken more than a year, but Keyth 2.0 is here! Moving forward, we will use the gray key safe mounted on the wall. You will use your BuckID, instead of a PIN, to open the safe. To take a key: swipe your BuckID, once the green light beside the door turns on, lift the lever below the door handle and open the door. Locate the key you want, rotate the captured key counter-clockwise and pull it out. Close the door when you are done. To return the key: swipe your ID, lift the lever, open the door. Insert the captured key (the one with the colored ring around it) and turn it clockwise to lock into place. If the key doesn?t turn, it?s likely in the wrong spot. If you need help, just ask! Spent Daily Sheets Please do not discard spent daily sheets. They should be given to a prep lab staff member or left on my table by Emma?s desk. I review all of these each day and archive any that need to be kept. Week 12 starts tomorrow: [cid:image003.png at 01DB9A4C.ED508230] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see the week 11 email for notes on CAR, QUL, and WST. ECE Students will be using 6-sided dice for the first part of this experiment. If they need more, there should be a supply in the window. Ice will also be needed; if you notice students wearing gloves on both hands, please nicely ask them to remove one glove. No additional commentary is needed. Please be polite- they?re still learning. MGB Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Sarah and Emma have replacement parts in both windows if needed. VOL This one has A LOT of equipment and solutions. Students will be using the multimeter kits which are on the bench beside Hood A. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the whole kit for one of the replacements in the window. Emma has made a guide on what to do with these. Please read it. The provided electrode kit is to be used for both Parts A and B. One magnetic stir bar is provided in the kit to help distinguish between iron and zinc electrodes. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off the electrodes with emery paper/cloth. This should be done on the provided cover stock; the cover stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Each room has been provided with 7 trays since they only have 7 snorkels. Students should not be sanding directly on the lab bench. Doing this makes me sad :( There?s a ton of waste for this experiment. Liquids should be discarded in the chemical waste beakers (white can). Contaminated paper, including spent emery paper, should go in the blue bucket. Spent electrodes should be collected in the canister in the window. Spent porous cups and Pasteur pipets should be discarded in the orange bucket. TM1 This one is essentially a long synthesis. A bin containing forty eight 50-mL Erlenmeyer flasks has been provided on the bench beside Hood A. This is all of the 50-mL flasks we have, so if anyone asks for more please direct them back to their room. There are two solutions being kept in the large fume hoods. The TAs will be putting a small amount of these into beakers with lids. If for some reason a new or additional beaker or lid is needed, they are in a small box in the window. Full disclosure: this a brand new experiment. There will be some hiccups, but this is normal. Everyone should remain communicative, and we?ll address issues as they come up. Other Important Information Keyth 2.0 Reminders You?ll need your BuckID to open new Keyth. Please also remember that when returning the key, you must rotate it into the locked vertical position. Attendance Notes I?ve restructured the attendance notes section of the daily sheet to clarify notation. Covers should be listed as ?absent person (cover person)?. If you arrive late, please write your name in this section followed by the time you arrived. If you are leaving early without a cover, you would write ?name (XX:XX)? where the XX:XX is the time you are leaving. If you do have a cover for leaving early, this would be listed as a cover. Science Olympiad- Volunteers Needed We need volunteers for the Ohio Science Olympiad State Tournament that will be held on Saturday, April 26th. Jeans with holes should be covered with scrubs or sweatpants. * Your entire foot should be covered, including your ankles. * You are welcome to keep shoes, socks, and/or pants in your PPE basket. Please note the following about working a shift in the window: * We?d prefer if the hoods on your hoodies/coats are down. This makes you seem less approachable to students. * Name badges should be visible. * Bags should be put under the table, not on the bench, or I by the trashcan. We need to be able to roll carts and such through the window without endangering your belongings. * Read Emma?s guides?. We?re seeing behaviors that are consistent with not having read Emma?s guides on how to handle special equipment. * When something is broken, unless indicated otherwise, you should place a broken equipment sticker on the item. These are available in the bottom left of the black paper organizer. We need more information than a post-it that says ?broken?. * Use THE Windex and the shelf labels to help you find items. * If you are unsure of how to complete a task, please ask for help?. We?ve been seeing some wonky cart placements after cart moves. You are accountable for the entirety of all messages sent to you by the Prep Lab Staff. Emails sent to preplabstudents at lists.osu.edu are archived for your convenience at https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/ Howdy! Lucky week 13 starts tomorrow. Schedule is below: [cid:image002.png at 01DB9E4D.399CA840] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see week 12 email for notes on ECE and VOL. AAP There are a ton of white solids used in this one. Many of them come with a scoop. We will have extras in the window just in case they are needed. Additional pH paper is in the window. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing and tubs for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A. LCP Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead students should use an empty beaker from their drawer. Students will not be provided with salt for their ice baths. Keep a close eye on the 25-mL test tubes. If they need refilled, more are available behind the marker boards. TM2 This is another brand-new experiment. Students will be analyzing their products from TM1. There are two materials packaged in smaller quantities: 3% silver nitrate and hexaaminecobalt (III) chloride. The entire days? worth of these materials will be in the lab room. The silver nitrate is in small brown bottles, the bottles are in a black plastic bin. Anything left in a bottle issued to a group should be discarded as chemical waste, the bottle then disposed of in the orange bucket. The hexaaminecobalt (III) chloride is in small plastic tubes. Anything left in a tube that was issued to a group should be discarded as chemical waste, the bottle then disposed of in the blue bucket. Other Important Information Science Olympiad- Volunteers Still Needed We need volunteers for the Ohio Science Olympiad State Tournament that will be held on Saturday, April 26th. Chemistry and Biochemistry will host 4 events on the second floor of Celeste. If you decide to volunteer, you will help us with proctoring, grading, swapping out lab materials between sessions, and quick clean up at the end of the event. For your participation, you will receive a free T-shirt, a boxed lunch (usually a sandwich, chips, and a cookie), and get to spend part of a Saturday with Tyler, Dr. Sarah, Emma, Dr. Fontes, Dr. Opoku, Dr. Jackman and others in Celeste! If you are interested in joining us, please complete the Science Olympiad Volunteer Form no later than April 4th. Summer and Fall Plans We?ve posted a roster on the Daily Sheet Board. Please review the information present and fill in anything that is missing. Please let us know if you have any questions! -Sent from my basement.
