Hi friends!

We have our first full week of lab coming up. Schedule is below:

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details.

DPR
TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that “leak” and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. Please see the note below about goggles and lab manuals.

WRM
TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. We’ll keep a box of extra WRM pipets in the window. Please break into this if a room runs out prior to the next cart check. The box is white and should say “WRM pipets” on it. If the box starts to get low, let us know. Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that “leak” and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. Please see the note below about goggles and lab manuals.

INK
TAs will be picking up INK unknowns from the lab support window. Remember that unknowns will be kept in the plastic boxes on the unknown/handouts shelf. Do not give out unknowns to students. We have put some extras of each pen, pencils, and blank chromatography paper in both windows just in case they are needed. Be prepared to give out 50-mL volumetric flasks, to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that “leak” and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. Please see the note below about goggles and lab manuals.

Other Important Information

Goggles
If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their “normal” goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. If the OTG goggles still don’t work, we have a small number of other options they can try. These are in a small white bucket in each window. These goggles should be cleaned with the provided alcohol wipes before students try them on.

Students in Chem 1110, 1208, 1210, or 1250 will receive a free pair of goggles from their Lab TA. If a student is not enrolled in Chem 1110, 1208, 1210, or 1250 and has never taken a chemistry course on OSU’s Columbus campus, they may stop by the window and get a pair of goggles for free. If they have taken chemistry on the Columbus campus before and do not have the goggles they were previously provided with, they’ll need to purchase a new pair from Chem Stores, 180 Celeste.

Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box litter. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Please replace the bags in the blue recycling barrels as necessary. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Emptied large cardboard boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling.

Lab Manuals
Boxes of lab manuals have been dropped off in each lab room. The boxes are stacked on the floor against the wall closest to Hood B. Each box has already been cut open for easy access. Emptied boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. Towards the end of the week, we may need to redistribute boxes between rooms to account for enrollment variances.

Daily Sheet
After completing a task listed on the daily sheet, please cross out the line with your name on it. This lets everyone know it’s been completed. For tasks assigned to the window, please initial next to your name on the mini daily sheet to indicate it’s been done.

If you arrive late, please write your name and arrival time on the attendance area in the daily sheet. If you have been approved to leave early, please write your name and approved early dismissal time in this area. Call offs & no shows will also be recoded in this area.

Shift Switches
We understand that sometimes you’ll need to miss a shift for a planned schedule conflict. If this happens, please first message the GroupMe to see if anyone can cover your shift. Hopefully, someone is willing to do so. It is common to not get a response if you ask about shifts in the distant future. We recommend asking about a week out. Once you have someone to cover your shift, you must send an email to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu<mailto:preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu> to notify us of the switch. You should cc the person that is covering your shift to keep them in the loop. While we do keep an eye on the GroupMe messages; unless you email us, the switch is not official.

Timesheets
Timesheets should be submitted at the end of each week, and no later than noon on Monday of the following week. A refresher on how to submit timesheets can be found at: https://admin.resources.osu.edu/workday/workday-for-employees/time-entry-processes. For our new folks, please be sure to include any time you spent on training items.
