You are accountable for the entirety of all messages sent to you by Prep Lab Staff. Howdy y?all! We hope you had a safe and relaxing winter break! Today is the first day of the ?spring? semester. Since today is a snow day, and the prep lab is closed, we will begin following our spring schedule tomorrow, Tuesday January 7th. The schedule for this week is below. Note that only 1208 is meeting this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. [cid:image001.png at 01DB6017.2CE067A0] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. OPH No chemicals will be used. Goggles will be available in the lab room for TAs to distribute. The lab manuals for this course are not yet in. TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. Blue recycling barrels will be placed outside of all labs to collect goggle boxes. Other Important Information Goggles If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their ?normal? goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. If the OTG goggles still don?t work, we have a small number of other options they can try. These are in a small white bucket in each window. If a student is not enrolled in Chem 1110, 1208, 1210, or 1250 and has never taken a chemistry course on OSU?s Columbus campus, they may stop by the window and get a pair of goggles for free. If they have taken chemistry on the Columbus campus before, they need to purchase a pair from Chem Stores, 180 Celeste. Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box litter. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Please tie off blue recycling barrel bags and replace them as necessary. First Floor Restrooms The first-floor restrooms are still under construction. Please continue to use the restrooms on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors, or in McPherson, Newman-Wolfram, or Evans. Addressing Items from the Prep Lab Survey I will be sending out a follow-up email this week detailing plans to address the items noted in the prep lab survey results. We identified the most impactful things that could be addressed in the time we had between fall and spring semester. Here?s a summary of what we have planned: Lab Attire There is room for improvement with prep lab student compliance on lab attire policies. The text below is from the guidebook. ?Clothing worn in the lab should provide skin protection from chemical spills and splashes. Appropriate clothing includes long pants or skirts that go to the ankle. Ankles should not be exposed. If a vessel containing chemicals falls to the floor, it is vital to make sure no exposure to the lower leg/ ankle occurs. At a minimum, all the red areas shown in the figure to the right should be completely covered before entering the lab. Pants made of spandex, or other thin and/or skin-tight materials, and clothing with holes are not acceptable, even if your lab coat covers the holes. Shoes should cover the entire foot (closed-toe and closed-back). Ankles should be completely covered. Extremely loose or bulky clothing is also not appropriate for the lab. Baggy sleeves are a fire hazard or may knock over lab supplies. The best materials to wear in the lab are natural fibers, such as cotton. It is acceptable to wear scrub pants or sweatpants over leggings or shorts. Chem stores, room 180 Celeste, typically has scrub tops and pants available for purchase. Proper PPE only needs to be worn when in lab spaces, it is not required in the prep lab office. Long hair must be tied back, as it can catch fire if it gets too close to an open flame or get pulled into a rotating object.? GroupMe Toward the end of the semester, we struggled with responding to GroupMe requests in a timely manner. If you are on the clock, you should be monitoring the GroupMe. Lost and Found Items Moving forward, all items found in the labs should be turned over to the undergrad office, 110 CE. Students looking for items that may have been left in lab should be directed to this location. Please do not leave random items on the benches in the lab support windows. They take up valuable space needed for equipment. Waste Runs Waste runs will now be scheduled 30 minutes after the start of lab. This will allow us to collect anything that was generated at the very end of the previous session and may have been missed under the previous plan. Waste runs will begin by completing the waste recon form. The items needed are then collected from the prep lab, the waste containers are swapped, brought back down to the prep lab, and dumped. Emptied waste containers are stored in their designated locations until needed again. Waste will still be collected on Friday evenings so that it?s not left upstairs over the weekend. If time permits, it should be dumped. If not, collect it, and we will dump it on Monday. A note should be left on the Daily Sheet board if waste needs to be dumped on Monday. Lab Readiness Checks We?ve streamlined the checklist used for this task. At the top of the sheet, you should record the experiment that is being completed in each room. You should also grab a gather sheet for each experiment so that you know what is needed. Waste will no longer be checked since it will be swapped out after the lab session starts. Refilling consumable items will become a scheduled task for the window people. Daily Sheet Items Tasks that must be completed with a buddy will be more clearly indicated on the Daily Sheet. ?REMOVE ALL CHEMICALS? task will be changed to ?REMOVE MATERIALS FROM REAGENT CART & HOODS?. Students assigned to this task should take a gather sheet for the experiments being removed so they can determine what should be taken. All items listed as ?on the cart? should be removed. Emma and Sarah will take care of equipment that is provided on the bench beside Hood A. Window Tasks We have shifted some tasks onto the people staffing the window. As these items are completed, you should initial the mini daily sheet on the clipboard. Completion of these tasks will be more thoroughly monitored. Window Notes Sarah and Emma have been updating the window notes to make them more user friendly. They will also be adding shelf positions for commonly requested items. This should help make it easier to find items when students request them. On a side note, they are also preparing an alphabetical index of all items in the window and their location. This is another resource to help you locate items more easily. Head TA Schedule The Head TA schedule in the window will no longer have cell phone numbers on it. If a Head TA or ALS needed to be contacted during the lab session, please use the walkie-talkie. Student Questions about assignments, make-ups, etc. If a student comes to the window seeking help with reaching the lab supervisors or a Head TA for things related to assignments, make-ups, etc., please give them one of our new ?Lab Supervisor Business Cards?. These will be available in both lab support windows and include information on how to get help with Gen Chem lab related items. Please let me know if you have any questions. Emails sent to preplabstudents at lists.osu.edu are archived at https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/ Hi friends! We have our first full week of lab coming up. Schedule is below: [cid:image002.png at 01DB6339.80F2E7D0] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. DPR TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that ?leak? and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. Please see the note below about goggles and lab manuals. WRM TAs should not need to pick up anything from the lab support window. We?ll keep a box of extra WRM pipets in the window. Please break into this if a room runs out prior to the next cart check. The box is white and should say ?WRM pipets? on it. If the box starts to get low, let us know. Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that ?leak? and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. Please see the note below about goggles and lab manuals. INK TAs will be picking up INK unknowns from the lab support window. Remember that unknowns will be kept in the plastic boxes on the unknown/handouts shelf. Do not give out unknowns to students. We have put some extras of each pen, pencils, and blank chromatography paper in both windows just in case they are needed. Be prepared to give out 50-mL volumetric flasks, to direct students to the window cart for pipets, pipet pumps, and burets. Pipet pumps that ?leak? and pipet pumps that have glass broken off in them should be collected in the designated bin. Please see the note below about goggles and lab manuals. Other Important Information Goggles If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their ?normal? goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. If the OTG goggles still don?t work, we have a small number of other options they can try. These are in a small white bucket in each window. These goggles should be cleaned with the provided alcohol wipes before students try them on. Students in Chem 1110, 1208, 1210, or 1250 will receive a free pair of goggles from their Lab TA. If a student is not enrolled in Chem 1110, 1208, 1210, or 1250 and has never taken a chemistry course on OSU?s Columbus campus, they may stop by the window and get a pair of goggles for free. If they have taken chemistry on the Columbus campus before and do not have the goggles they were previously provided with, they?ll need to purchase a new pair from Chem Stores, 180 Celeste. Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box litter. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Please replace the bags in the blue recycling barrels as necessary. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Emptied large cardboard boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. Lab Manuals Boxes of lab manuals have been dropped off in each lab room. The boxes are stacked on the floor against the wall closest to Hood B. Each box has already been cut open for easy access. Emptied boxes should be broken down and placed in the hallway for recycling. Towards the end of the week, we may need to redistribute boxes between rooms to account for enrollment variances. Daily Sheet After completing a task listed on the daily sheet, please cross out the line with your name on it. This lets everyone know it?s been completed. For tasks assigned to the window, please initial next to your name on the mini daily sheet to indicate it?s been done. If you arrive late, please write your name and arrival time on the attendance area in the daily sheet. If you have been approved to leave early, please write your name and approved early dismissal time in this area. Call offs & no shows will also be recoded in this area. Shift Switches We understand that sometimes you?ll need to miss a shift for a planned schedule conflict. If this happens, please first message the GroupMe to see if anyone can cover your shift. Hopefully, someone is willing to do so. It is common to not get a response if you ask about shifts in the distant future. We recommend asking about a week out. Once you have someone to cover your shift, you must send an email to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu to notify us of the switch. You should cc the person that is covering your shift to keep them in the loop. While we do keep an eye on the GroupMe messages; unless you email us, the switch is not official. Timesheets Timesheets should be submitted at the end of each week, and no later than noon on Monday of the following week. A refresher on how to submit timesheets can be found at: https://admin.resources.osu.edu/workday/workday-for-employees/time-entry-processes. For our new folks, please be sure to include any time you spent on training items. Note that Monday is a University holiday, so Mondays will be one week behind for the rest of the semester. Considering last week was the first week of lab, things went pretty well! [cid:image001.png at 01DB65A8.8BAF6380] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. DAG Materials will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Be prepared to provide replacement plastic 50 mL graduated cylinders. The students tend to put these in their drawers instead of returning them. There are now enough brass pieces of each type for each student to have one. Extras are in the window. MSR Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for replacement pipets, beakers, and pipet pumps. Restock the cart frequently. Burets are in the back of the window. We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret)Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them, or are leaking- we may be able to salvage them. CPC The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the water pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked at least every 30 minutes by someone from the lab support window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how to add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask (still pot) properly. You must watch this video prior to the start of CPC. Remember that both tubes (from the condenser and to the condenser) should be inside the bucket. If you need to stop heating the flask for any reason, turn the heating mantle off and lower it away from the flask. This is why we set them up so high- it makes it easy to kill the heat quickly. SOL Keep an eye on the 25 mL test tubes and weigh boats during your lab readiness checks. These items will likely need to be restocked throughout the week. Replacements are available behind the white boards. LCP Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead student should use an empty beaker from their drawer. Students will not be provided with salt for their ice baths. Keep a close eye on the 25-mL test tubes. If they need refilled, more are available behind the marker boards. Other Important Information ?THE Windex? (Window Index) Emma has created an index listing the shelf or drawer position for everything that is in the window. This is another resource for you to use when you need to find something. This will be updated as needed. Heaters Turn heaters in the prep lab office and lab support windows off at the end of the day. If they keep getting left on, we will take them away. You should also be able to adjust the temp on the thermostat in most rooms. Heaters in the walls and stairwells do not belong to gen chem, and should not be messed with. Blue Barrels If a barrel is full let one of the prep lab staff know and we?ll help get it sealed up and swapped. Don?t overfill them please. Stop when we reach the bottom of the upper ring. Lab Readiness Checks During your check, please look at the solids used for SOL. If the jar is pretty much empty, please swap it out. These don?t get emptied very quickly, so it doesn?t make sense to cart check them. Let?s try this method and see how it goes. Message-ID: Hi Everyone, CPC is one of our trickier experiments. If you are assigned to the lab support window, you need to check the stills at least every 30 minutes. Use the timer on the roller window frame to help you remember. When checking the stills, you need to add a full scoop of ice to the water bucket AND transfer the water in the receiving flask back into the heating flask. The heating flask should not be allowed to boil dry. If you haven?t done so already, please review the video linked here. Emma and Sarah have also placed a printed copy of the SOP in the window for your reference. Stills should be turned on 10-15 minutes before the start time of the labs that need them. Still should be turned off once everyone in the room has used it. Both the heating mantle and water pump should be unplugged over night. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them or are leaking- we may be able to salvage them. FPD Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. Keep an eye on the ice machines, even out the ice regularly to keep the machine going, let us know if it?s getting low. If the machine is getting low, we can top it off with ice from the prep lab. We do not provide a scoop to students; they should just use an empty beaker from their drawer. Freezing point apparatus will be on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts will be in the windows. Note that the inner tube in this apparatus is just the 50 mL tube we keep on the window cart. Extra batteries and tiny screw drivers will also be available in the window. SAL TAs will pick up sets of salts at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes will be available in the red bins by the balances. Additional colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes are stored behind the marker boards. Only empty centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. Blue buckets should be swapped out during waste runs if they are more than half full. If you see any leftover tubes of solids on the reagent carts when doing your checks, please give them to the windows- window people, please put them in the ?partial unknown sets? bin. Other Important Information Cart Moves When doing cart moves, please be sure you are placing the carts in the correct positions. Carts going into storage are placed by the tallest window near hood B. The cart being used should be placed at the end of the oval bench closest to the shower. Bottles that are uncapped or fell over should be fixed before moving to the next room. Glove Boxes Do not stack boxes of gloves on top of the plastic box holders in the lab. This is a safety issue. The boxes can fall off and hit someone. First Floor Demolition Starting this week, the ceiling, lighting, and flooring on the first floor will be demolished after hours (10pm-7am). Following this, specific areas of the first floor will be closed while the new ceiling, lighting, and floor are installed. Further info about which areas will be closed off will be shared later. Multiple errors contributed to the situation: A second floor 1210 cart change and chemical removal was schedule in the morning. The people that did this task also completed the 1220 cart change and chemical removal that was scheduled for later in the day. In the afternoon, the people assigned to the second floor 1220 cart change and chemical removal saw that there was no second floor 1220 new gather. They assumed they were supposed to do the third floor instead. Chemicals that were still needed later that day were removed. I want to remind everyone that it?s critical only the assigned tasks are done. If something is confusing, or seems off, ask for help before you do anything. We all make mistakes, but together we can prevent them from causing a potential disruption to the teaching labs. Be sure you are only doing the tasks as indicated, and at the time they are scheduled. Please reach out if you have any questions. I advised them to leave the ice bath in the hood so that we could take care of the broken glass once the ice melts. Our plan would be to collect these in a tub as they are noticed. Once the ice melts Sarah, Emma, or myself will take care of it.
