As with any other major lab event (fire, shower use, eyewash use, loss of consciousness, body fluid cleanup, utility failure, etc.) I should be notified immediately. The easiest way to do this is via the GroupMe. Linda, MJ, Sarah, and Emma know to call my cell phone if I am off campus when a major event occurs. I will handle any paperwork and sending information up the chain of command. From: cbc-everyone On Behalf Of Turro, Claudia via cbc-everyone Sent: Saturday, February 1, 2025 9:18 AM To: cbc-everyone at lists.osu.edu Subject: FW: Law enforcement and immigration status CBC community, The university has issued the following advisories regarding potential visits to classrooms offices and clinics by law enforcement officers related to the immigration status of students and patients. I have been asked to share this with anyone who teaches in the department and with office staff who work with students. Please see highlighted areas. It is important to note that university employees (which includes GTAs) cannot disclose a student?s immigration status to law enforcement because doing so would be a FERPA violation. In addition to contacting OSUPD at 614-292-2121 and the office of legal affairs at 614-292-0611, also please contact me (turro.1) and/or one of the department?s Vice Chairs listed below if law enforcement comes to your classroom, lab, or office. Dr. Jackman (undergraduate students, jackman.14) Dr. Schultz (graduate students, Schultz.133) Dr. Hadad (staff/research, hadad.1). Thanks, Claudia Turro Dr. Melvin L. Morris Professor and Department Chair Classroom/Academic Spaces The university has received questions about law enforcement and immigration status in our classroom settings and academic spaces. As a reminder, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student education records, including immigration status, for all students. That means university employees cannot disclose a student?s immigration status to law enforcement ? proactively or in response to questions ? without consultation with the Office of Legal Affairs. Generally, all local, state and federal law enforcement agencies ? including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ? coordinate with the Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) when they have enforcement needs on campus. We anticipate that the process will continue to be followed, however, if law enforcement come to your classroom space or office, contact OSUPD at 614-292-2121 and the Office of Legal Affairs at (614) 292-0611 to assist. The Ohio State University will follow all state and federal laws. The Office of Legal Affairs will provide guidance should any changes to the law impact our academic policies or practices. Thank for your assistance in serving our students. Clinical Spaces The university has received questions about law enforcement and immigration status in our clinical settings. First, it is important to note that nothing has changed with our services, policies, or practices for the immigrant patient population. All care providers, including students, must abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and provide care per clinical expectation. HIPAA applies to all patients, regardless of immigration status. This means that care providers cannot disclose any information about a patient?s immigration status to law enforcement ? proactively or in response to questions. Additionally, there is no requirement to document immigration status and, generally, patients are not asked about their status unless it directly relates to their health care. Generally, all local, state and federal law enforcement agencies ? including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ? coordinate with the Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD) when they have enforcement needs on campus. We anticipate that the process will continue to be followed, however, if law enforcement come to your office or clinical space, contact OSUPD at 614-292-2121 and the Office of Legal Affairs at (614) 292-0611 to assist. The Ohio State University will follow all state and federal laws. The Office of Legal Affairs will provide guidance should any changes to the law impact patient care. Thank you for your assistance in serving our patients. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One more day of FPD and then it?s 1210?s turn to use the ice machines for PbI. The schedule for this week is below. [cid:image003.png at 01DB7025.66FC6740] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see the Week 4 email for info on SHM and FPD. MML/MGB Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Sarah and Emma have replacement parts in both windows if needed. PbI Solid reagents will be handed out from the lab support windows. These are provided in class sets and should be picked up by the TA before lab starts. Do not give out partial sets at the start of lab. We?ll be using the vacuum ports for this experiment; the TAs do not need to do anything with the vacuum pump. Be sure the vacuum control knob in the second-floor window (by the fire extinguisher) is in the ?auto? position We will also be using the ovens; they open by pulling the bottom of the handle up towards the ceiling- no rotating required. We strongly encourage TAs and students to keep the oven doors closed as much as possible. This helps with heat loss. When doing lab readiness checks, please verify that a box of P5 filter paper is present on the reagent cart. If not, grab one from the window. BAR We will be using the new spectrometers for this experiment. The spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room on both floors. They use the same power cord as the hot plates. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the bench next to Hood A. These items should be returned after use. Be prepared to replace volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken. As a reminder, if any pipet pumps with glass stuck in them (or ?leaky? pipet pumps) are returned to the window, please put them in the appropriate labeled bin. LLT Be prepared to hand out burets, pipets, pipet pumps, and blue stoppers. All of these items are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the items being used for LLT. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. Blue square carboys of 0.44 M NaOH should be swapped out during the lab readiness checks by those completing them. When swapping out the blue carboys, check the fill level of the spill tray. Let us know if it?s more than half full. SST This experiment will be done in pairs this semester and moving forward. Students and pH meters don?t always get along. The lab supervisors and prep lab have made significant efforts to help this. pH meters, probes, and cables to connect the two, are on the bench closest to Hood A. There will be some rooms with a mix of old (black cable) and new (white wire) probes, and some rooms with only new (white cable) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new probes will need to be attached to the probe and meter via the supplied white cables. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning. Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues. It will be printed and laminated, but we have attached a draft to this email for convenience. Other Important Information Lightheaded Students & Fainting It is policy in gen chem that if any student expresses concern about being lightheaded or fainting, or faints, 911 should be called. The student can refuse treatment and/or transportation once the paramedics arrive. We?ve seen several cases where a student has urged us not to call 911 but wound up being transported for their own benefit. Check the Schedule on Teams Please check your schedule on Teams and let me know of any mistakes. I?ve asked before, but we found a mistake this past Thursday. SB104 & Single Occupancy Restrooms This month, a new state law takes effect that requires OSU to ?designate with clear signage each student restroom, locker room, changing room, or shower room accessible by multiple students at the same time for the exclusive use by students of the male biological sex only or by students of the female biological sex only.? Note that this law does not apply to single occupancy restrooms; anyone is welcome to use any available single occupancy restroom. If you or any students wish to know where a single occupancy restroom might be available, please see this map. Note that some of the single occupancy restrooms around CBC buildings are not yet included in this map, so a supplemental list is below: South Campus Parks Hall: 1st floor (100T); 2nd floor (224T), 3rd floor (324T) BRT: 1st floor (121T, 123T, 155T); basement (021T; 023T) North Campus Celeste: 2nd floor (243T); 3rd floor (343T); 4th floor (443T) CBEC: 1st floor (103T); 2nd floor (2 in tower); 3rd floor (2 in tower); 4th floor (2 in tower) Fontana: 1st floor (1003T); 2nd floor (2151T) Stillman: 2nd floor (219T) Additional Unknown Requests Only give out full sets of unknowns at the start of lab. If someone needs a single sample check the partial sets bin first. If what you need isn?t in there, break a set and put the remainder of the set in the partials bin. Emails sent to preplabstudents at lists.osu.edu are archived for your convenience at https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/ Greetings! Week 6 is upon us! Here?s what we?ve got planned: [cid:image001.png at 01DB76FB.A3470110] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see the Week 5 email for info on MML and BAR. STR This is one of my favorites! Nothing should be needed from the lab support window. Students should try to keep their samples under the snorkels as much as possible. This will help immensely with the odor in the room. The waste will be disposed of in the white can (Chemical Waste container) in Hood B. Concentrated sulfuric acid dropper bottles should stay in Hood A. If the TA cannot find it, please have them double check Hood A and the cart. CPC The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the water pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked at least every 30 minutes by someone from the lab support window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how to add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask (still pot) properly. You must watch this video prior to the start of CPC. Remember that end of both pieces of tubing (from the condenser and to the condenser) should be inside the bucket. If you need to stop heating the flask for any reason, turn the heating mantle off and lower it away from the flask. This is why we set them up so high- it makes it easy to kill the heat quickly. CYC This is a quick one! pH paper and pH reference cards will be on the reagent cart. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window. TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Only hand out full sets of unknowns to TAs. Any leftovers should be properly disposed of by the TA at the end of the lab session. If for some reason during the lab session another sample is needed, check the partial unknown sets bin first. If you cannot find what you need in the partials bin, break a set, and put the remainder in the partials bin. CLK This one tends to either be quick or take the whole lab session. Flip thermometers, timers, and rulers are all in the student drawers. Extra thermometers and replacement batteries will be in the window. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. Keep a close eye on your spill kits and request replacements as needed. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A. WST This experiment will be done in pairs this semester and moving forward. pH meters and probes are still on the bench closest to Hood A. There will be some rooms with a mix of old (black cable) and new (white cable) probes, and some rooms with only new (white cable) probes. The probes with the black cables will need to be attached to the top of the meters. The new probes will require the cable to be connected at the probe and at the meter. Connections are made on the top of the meter by pushing and turning. Both pH probe types will have either a black o-ring or blue rubber piece at the top of the probe shaft to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These should stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. Students should only remove the probe from the rack, the test tube should be left in the rack. If a student indicates their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Emma has prepared a guide on how to handle pH meter issues. It will be available in the window for reference. Other Important Information Security When closing a floor, be sure that all labs are locked up. If there are two people assigned to the window, one person should lock the lab doors, the other person should later check that they are all truly locked. If a lab is not being used, it needs to be locked, regardless of time. If you are completing a task that necessitates unlocking a room, please be sure the room is locked when you leave it. We cannot leave the prep lab unlocked and unattended. If you are the last person in the office/lab and need to go somewhere please have someone come down to babysit the lab, or grab key #1 in Keyth, and lock up while you are gone. If Sarah and/or Emma dismiss the student employees, and nobody will be in the office/lab after all students leave, be sure to lock the door into the office and the door into the lab before heading out. Max Hours per Day Effective immediately: student employees of the prep lab are not permitted to work more than 8 hours per day, including picked up shifts. This policy is being implemented for safety reasons. New Window Task- Paper Towel Check We?ll be adding a new task to the window, Paper Towel Check. For this, the assigned person should check that each sink and snorkel on their floor has a roll of paper towels. If more paper towels are needed, please use the stash under the sinks in the room. Keys Please put keys back after you use them. We?ve had several instances recently where keys were needed but were not in Keyth. It?s common that they are left in a lab coat pockets. Please check your pockets when you take your lab coat off. That means week 7 is coming up next. The lab schedule is below. [cid:image002.png at 01DB7D27.D128F340] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. Please see the Week 6 email for notes on STR and CLK. STO TA demo kits are in Hood A. These include a jar of sand for smothering a Mg fire if it gets out of control. To be clear, the jar of sand should only be used in an emergency. If the TA cannot find the magnesium strips, they should check the cart, the hood, and the box containing the other items needed for the demonstration. LLT Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for burets, pipets, pipet pumps, and blue stoppers. Partially filled bottles of lemon and lime juice should be placed in the fridge. We will periodically combine these. When doing a gather, please check the fridge first for full bottles of lemon and lime juice. If you need more than what is available in the fridge, please grab new bottles from aisle 28. No partial bottles of lemon or lime juice should be left in aisle 28. LCP Students will be using ice toward the end of lab. We do not provide scoops for ice, instead students should use an empty beaker from their drawer. Students will not be provided with salt for their ice baths. Keep a close eye on the 25-mL test tubes. If they need refilled, more are available behind the marker boards. MGB Model kits will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Sarah and Emma have replacement parts in both windows if needed. VOL This one has A LOT of equipment and solutions. Students will be using multimeters. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the whole kit for one of the replacements in the window. Fill out a broken equipment sticker with as much detail as possible, and place it on the returned unit. One of the prep lab staff members will look at the ?broken? kit. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off the electrodes with emery paper/cloth. This should be done on the provided cardstock; the card stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Each room has been provided with 7 trays since they only have 7 snorkels. Students should not be sanding directly on the lab bench. Other Important Information Mid-Semester Survey You will soon receive an email inviting you to complete a mid-semester survey. For those of you that were with us in the fall, this will feel very similar. We want to gauge what is going well and what has room for improvement. We also want to gain some insight into whether the changes we made between fall and spring semester are helping. This survey is anonymous, so please be honest. Loaner iPads We?ll place one loaner iPad in each window. A student may check these out for situations where their iPad may have died or the room is short on devices needed for a particular experiment (think MGB, MML, or EMS). Waste Containers Please be sure all waste containers are closed when they are not being filled. Specifically, we?ve been seeing the glass and lab debris barrels left open. Lids should be returned to the barrels after adding waste. If it still doesn?t work, trade it with one of the extras in the window. Place a broken item sticker on the faulty unit. When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bucket of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it?ll take too long. IHT Materials will be available on the reagent cart or on the bench beside hood A. Cups and lids will be in the red dispensers by the balances. We?re going to use quite a few weigh boats, cup and lids- so be sure to keep a close eye on these. SAL TAs will pick up sets of salts at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes will be available in the red bins by the balances. Additional colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes are stored behind the marker boards. Only empty centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. Blue buckets should be swapped out during waste runs if they are more than half full. If you see any leftover tubes of solids on the reagent carts when doing your checks, please give them to the windows- window people, please put them in the ?partial unknown sets? bin. 1250 Review Chem 1250 will be holding another review session this week. The lecture instructor will be giving us handouts to place on the cart during the REVIEW cart change. Please leave any papers you find on the cart there until the HCAL cart change. If TAs come to the window looking for the handouts, please remind them they are on the 1250 reagent cart. BAR The spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room on both floors. Other Important Information Removing Reagents Take a gather sheet with you so you know what to remove. We?ve been leaving behind things in the hoods and on the benches. Tyler Checks Things? I look at the mini daily sheets the next day, I also review the forms in the basket on top of the daily sheet cabinet when I empty it. Broken Bottles If you come across a bottle with a broken cap, missing label, etc. Let us know so we can help take care of it. You can always access the caps, scoops, etc. on the end of aisle 26/27. Broken caps can be thrown in the ?plastics? lab debris barrel. Broken Equipment We?ll have a broken UV-Vis cart. If someone reports a broken UV-Vis, please take the cart to the room, place the broken unit on the cart, and return the cart to the window. If someone reports a broken balance, a broken equipment sticker should be placed on the balance and a message should be sent in the GroupMe. Please let us know if you have any questions!
