Date: Sun, 1 Sep 2024 23:18:28 +0000 Subject: [Preplabstudents] Autumn 2024- Week 3 Message-ID: Hi friends! We made it through our first week of lab! Note that Monday is a holiday, so the prep lab will be closed. Students are not permitted to log hours on university holidays. [cid:image001.png at 01DAFCA3.B3850900] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. DAG Materials will be provided on the bench beside Hood A. Be prepared to provide replacement plastic 50 mL graduated cylinders. The students like to put these in their drawers instead of returning them. Be prepared to hand out more if you are in the window. Be aware that there are not enough of the known brass pieces for each student to have their own. This is normal, they need to share. CPC The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked at least every 30 minutes by someone in the lab support window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how to add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask (still pot) properly. You must watch this video prior to the start of CPC. Remember that both tubes (from the condenser and to the condenser) should be inside the ice/water bucket. We have put a white plastic mallet in each window. Please use this to break up any ice clumps in the ice machines. A plastic beaker with a handle will also be in each window- use this to add ice to each apparatus. SOL Keep an eye on the 25 mL test tubes and weigh boats during your lab readiness checks. These items will likely need to be restocked throughout the week. Replacements are available behind the white boards. Green stoppers have been moved into the drawers. CDY The TAs will pick up Jolly Ranchers, which are on the unknown shelf. The students will need to use the carboy of distilled water for this one- please check the level in the carboy when you are doing your readiness checks. If it looks like it?s getting low, let us know. Other Important Information- Headphones & Watching Shows/Movies/Etc. Please remember that you are not permitted to wear headphones while on the clock. This includes using a single earbud. Please don?t try to hide it with your hand or hair? it?s disrespectful. Please also remember that you are not permitted to watch shows/movies/etc. while on the clock. When other members of the Department see this, it causes trouble. Window Items When TAs turn in completed waste sheets, please place them in the silver bin. If the bin is getting full, please let us know. I am adding a ?Window Tasks? section to the Daily Sheet. We need to do better with sanitizing and checking the ice machines now that we will have students moving around more. We also need to be sure we are checking the stills for CPC. I will no longer be assigning cart moves to specific people. Someone from the window needs to complete the tasks shown, then initial on the line once complete. 240/260/340/360 Trash We need to make sure the trash cans in these rooms are pulled into the hallway after the last lab each day and returned for the first lab the following day. The TAs and Head TAs will help us with this, but we are ultimately responsible for making sure this happens. I think the easiest plan is that whoever closes the room at the end of the day makes sure the trash cans are out. The person doing the lab checks in the morning should make sure they are put back. Lab Manuals and Goggles We will be moving extra lab manuals and goggles into the windows at the beginning of the week. Students that need either of these items will be instructed to stop by the window. Outstanding Training Items Please check the Prep Lab forum for any outstanding training items. I would like to get all of these completed by the end of Week 3. If you completed the make-up fire extinguisher training with Dr. Moore, you will need to upload your certificate to receive credit. Please let us know if you have any questions. This is the elevator that we use to transport chemicals and waste between the prep lab and the gen chem labs on the 2nd and 3rd floors. With the freight elevator unavailable, we'll be using the passenger elevator as needed. Alternately, the elevator in Evans can be used. You would need to take your cart across the glass walkway into Evans, catch the elevator, then take the glass walkway back into Celeste. Dr. Moore has requested that if chemicals or waste are being moved in the Celeste passenger elevator, only the personnel moving these items travel in the elevator, no other passengers. With that in mind, the general population can still use the passenger elevator, but priority will be given to those that need it for accessibility reasons and for the transportation of chemicals and waste. If a priority individual needs to use it, we'll pause chemical and waste transportation and allow them to complete their journey first. We strongly encourage students to use the stairs when possible. Students also have the option to use the elevators in McPherson, Newman-Wolfrom, or Evans. Although those elevators will not get them to the 4th floor in Celeste, they will at least cut down the number of stairs they will need to take by getting them to the third floor. This is our first week with Monday labs doing something different from the rest of the week. Be sure to pay attention to the lab schedule, it can get weird. [cid:image001.png at 01DB01EA.8A949550] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. MML Model kits will be provided on the bottom of the reagent carts or on the bench beside Hood A. We do have replacement parts in 130 CE if needed. MSR Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for replacement pipets, beakers, and pipet pumps. Restock the cart as frequently. Burets are in the back of the window. We have a bin for broken burets, in some cases we can salvage them. (List price is ~$200 per buret)Please keep any pipet pumps that have broken off pipets in them- we should be able to salvage them. FPD Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. Check the ice machine every 30 minutes- set a timer to remind you. There is no scoop provided, students should just use a beaker from their drawer. Freezing point apparatus will be on the reagent carts or on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts will be in the windows. Note that the inner tubes in this apparatus is just the 50 mL tubes we keep on the window cart. Extra batteries and tiny screw drivers will also be available in the window. SYN Day 1 Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. There is no scoop provided, students should just use a beaker from their drawer. Extra red flea size stir bars and vacuum tubing will be available in the window. Sarah and I will manage the microwave. Note that concentrated phosphoric acid is not needed for Day 1 and will not be provided. Each room will have a microscope. We will snag a tiny amount of sample from the first group to obtain crude product to put under the microscope. If students observe the temperature on the digital readout going down as they heat up their melting point apparatus, they plugged the thermocouple in the wrong way. They just need to remove it, turn it 180? and reinsert it. Replacement thermocouples will also be available in the window. Each room is limited to only 6 groups due to the layout in the microwave. If a room asks for more reaction tubes, please check they don?t have more than 6 groups before handing anything out. Any questions you cannot answer should be directed to me. EMS These will be set up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. One more day of crazy ice use this semester. [cid:image002.png at 01DB07A9.34040DF0] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. STR This is one of my favorites! Nothing should be needed from the lab support window. The waste will be disposed of in the white can (Chemical Waste container) in Hood B. PbI Solid reagents will be handed out from the lab support windows. Vacuum tubing is in a drawer at each station. Extras will be available at each window. We?ll be using the vacuum ports for this experiment; the TAs do not need to do anything with the vacuum pump. Be sure the vacuum control knob in the second floor window is in the ?auto? position. We will also be using the ovens; they open by pulling the bottom of the handle up towards the ceiling- no rotating required. We strongly encourage TAs and students to keep the oven doors closed as much as possible. This helps with heat loss. BAR We will be using the blue and white spectrometers for this experiment. These spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room on the second floor. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the reagent cart or on the bench next to Hood A. These items should be returned after use. Be prepared to replace the volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken. As a reminder, if any pipet pumps with glass in them (or ?leaky? pipet pumps) are returned to the window, please put them in the appropriate labeled bin in the window. SYN Day 2 Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. There is no scoop provided, students should just use a beaker from their drawer. Extra white pea size stir bars and vacuum tubing will be available in the window. Concentrated phosphoric acid is is used for Day 2 and will be provided in Hood A. Each room will have a microscope. We will snag a tiny amount of sample from the first group to obtain crude product to put under the microscope. If the microscope says it?s not connected, you need to go into the tablet wifi settings and connect to the option that starts with M. If it asks for a password, its just 12345678. Any questions you cannot answer should be directed to me. XUF Day 1 Students will not be running XRF analysis on their pennies, instead Sarah has done this for them. The results are on the sticker attached to each bagged penny. We will be using the blue and white spectrometers for this experiment. Pennies are in the window. Hazardous gas will be produced when the penny dissolves. If the exhaust stops working the lab room must be evacuated. The ?old UV-Vis solution? will be provided ready to use, no dilution needs to be done before analysis. Other Important Information- Lab Security Any of our labs that are not occupied need to be locked. This includes the prep lab. If you are the last person in the prep lab, and need to go somewhere, please lock up before leaving the lab/office. We have had thefts from the Department in the past. An unlocked, unattended lab space is Waste Runs I schedule waste runs for all lab rooms that have not been checked since the last time they were used. If we aren?t using a lab room at the time the waste run is scheduled, you still need to check it. Its quite possible we didn?t have time to check it when it was used last. You are welcome to check the rooms first to determine what supplies need to be brought up. Alternately, you can just take up a cart loaded with everything you might need. As we have mentioned several times, waste runs cannot be done alone. If your partner is not around, give them a couple minutes. If they still don?t show up, please grab someone out of the prep lab office to help you. If there aren?t any students available, grab one of the prep lab staff. Window Cart The window carts got hit pretty hard last week. Please check them periodically and restock anything that is getting low. Let us know if you are getting low on any supplies in the window. It can take some time to get replacement items out of Evans. Trash & Recycling I have been asked to remind you that if we ask you to take items to the dumpster, bulk trash should go in the large brown open top dumpster closest to Evans Lab. Nothing should be put in the large redish open top dumpster on the loading dock- this is for construction materials only. Recyclable materials should be put in the smaller red dumpster with the plastic lids. Bags of trash should be put in the small gray dumpster with the plastic lids. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. SHM Metals will be in a plastic box with a yellow label- they could be on the reagent cart or on the bench near Hood A. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. Additional cups and lids are available in the cabinet under the benches closest to Hood A. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on the cups and lids, refill them as necessary. CYC This is a quick one! pH paper will be on the reagent carts. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window cart. TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. CLK This one should be quicker than in past years, but don?t be surprised if they take the whole lab session. Flip thermometers, timers, and rulers are all now in the student drawers. Extra thermometers and replacement batteries will be in the window. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. We?ll be ramping up the number kept in each window for the week. Keep on top of them. LLT Be prepared to hand out lots of burets, pipets, pipet pumps, and blue stoppers. Remember that the pipets and pipet pumps are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the pipets and pumps. Blue stoppers are in one of the drawers within the window room. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. If the drip tray gets full, let us know so that we can take care of it. XUF Day 2 We will be moving a large instrument into Hood A of 330. A tank of acetylene will also be clamped to the bench near this hood. While the instrument is in this hood, the orange bucket will temporarily be placed under Hood A. Other Important Information- Trash Cans Moving forward, we will be pulling the trash cans out of all labs each night so they can be emptied. Each morning, those doing lab checks will need to return the trash cans to their proper location. Security When closing a floor, be sure that all labs are locked up. If there are two people assigned to the window, one person should lock the lab doors, the other person should later check that they are all locked. If a lab is not being used, it needs to be locked. If you are completing a task that necessitates unlocking a room, please relock the room when you are done. We cannot leave the prep lab unlocked and unattended. If you are the last person in the office/lab and need to go somewhere please have someone come down to babysit the lab, or grab key #1 in Keyth, and lock up while you are gone. Pipet Pumps If a pipet pump seems to be ?leaky? the student should take it the window and get a new one. The leaky pump should be placed in the appropriate bin for Sarah and I to look at. Other Important Information Covers and Shift Switches Please remember that a cover or shift switch is not official until an email is sent to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu. Training Items If you have outstanding training items, please get them completed. This includes the title IX training. Elevator Reminder: With the freight elevator unavailable, we are using the passenger elevator as needed. Full Bottles when Gathering Please be sure you are grabbing full reagent bottles when completing a chemical gather. If you are unable to find full bottles, please let one of the prep lab staff know. We can determine if bottles need to be refilled, combined, or additional solution needs to be made. Fall Break We will follow our normal schedule Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday the week of fall break (October 7th, 8th, and 9th). However, the prep lab will close at 6:30 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday (October 8th and 9th). The prep lab will be closed all day on Thursday and Friday (October 10th & 11th). Instead, we will swap them during the lab readiness checks between sessions. We want to try our best to keep each class using a single carboy. This will help keep their data consistent. The Daily Sheet will look like this: [cid:image002.png at 01DB134E.456B5340] After bringing down partial bottles of lemon juice, lime juice, and partial carboys of NaOH, please place them in the appropriately labeled ?partial? shelf. Please only gather materials from the shelves labeled ?full.? Please see photos below. Yellow signs are for full containers, blue for partials. [cid:image003.png at 01DB134E.456B5340][cid:image011.jpg at 01DB134D.EAACBC00] We will work on combining partial bottles during down time. As always, please let a prep lab staff member know if you are unable to locate a sufficient number of full containers to complete your task.
