I want to be sure you are kept in the loop. Starting tomorrow, Thursday October 3rd, we will be piloting a new method of doing waste runs. Instead of scheduling a run for one type of waste on both floors, we will schedule a run for all waste on a single floor. Here?s the plan: If scheduled for a waste run, grab a ?Gen Chem Waste Run Reconnaissance Notes? sheet from the gather sheet drawer. Head up to your assigned floor and note anything that needs to be swapped out or replaced. Come back down to 130, grab the materials you need, and then complete your run. Completed sheets will be placed in the basket on the gather sheet cabinet. Evening Waste? The last waste run of the day should be completed prior to the window closing on the floor. Ideally, the window people should lock up all rooms at the end of the session. We can?t have labs unlocked on an unattended floor. Waste should be dumped if there is more than 20 minutes remaining until everyone is scheduled to leave for the day. In other words, on Monday, Thursday, and Friday waste should be dumped if it?s brought downstairs prior to 6:10 pm. On Tuesday and Wednesday waste should be dumped if it's brought downstairs before 9:40 pm. You are accountable for the entirety of all email messages sent to you by the Prep Lab Staff. Hi friends! Up next is Week 9! We hope you were able to find some time to relax over fall break. We?re back to experiments starting on Mondays. For now? [cid:image002.png at 01DB1DC6.04A56580] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. CAR TAs will be picking up glucose test strips from the windows. These are light and moisture sensitive and are kept in the desiccators on the bench within the window. To open the desiccator, unlatch the three latches and swing the door open. Do the revers to close the desiccator. I?m ok with taking back unused glucose test strips since they are so expensive. IHT Materials will be available on the reagent cart or on the bench beside hood A. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on the cups and lids and refill as necessary. SAL TAs will pick up sets of salts at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes will be available in the red bins by the balances. Additional colorless empty microcentrifuge tubes are stored behind the marker boards. Check these before each la, and refill as necessary. Only empty centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. We will swap out the blue buckets at the end of each day. If you see any leftover tubes of solids on the reagent carts when doing your checks, please give them to the windows- window people, please put them in the ?partial unknown sets? bin. EMS These will be set up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as hood B). Other Important Information Timesheets It?s easy to forget to submit timesheets for weeks with breaks in them. Please be sure you have submitted your timesheet for last week. Requests from Prep Lab Staff Remember that working on homework, reading, etc. when not completing tasks is a privilege. Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2024 02:12:17 +0000 Subject: [Preplabstudents] Recent Issues Message-ID: Hi Everyone, I wanted to take a moment to address some issues we?ve had recently: Lab Readiness Checks There was significant room for improvement on how well cups and lids were restocked this week. I believe there were a few contributing factors, with the primary two being: 1. Our students were instructed for several weeks to ignore this portion of the checklist. Once you get into a habit, it can be hard to break. 2. The checklist erroneously indicated that the dispenser was ok if it wasn?t empty. To help with this, starting next week, we will switch to a modified checklist (PDF attached). There are two sections, one for things that will always be checked and one for things that are ?seasonal? (they?re only relevant for a few specific experiments). We will post an example checklist on the Daily Sheet Board each week to indicate what ?seasonal? items need to be checked. An example for week 10, next week, is attached. Glucose Test Strips We ran into an issue yesterday with a shortage of glucose test strips for the last 1110 lab session. These strips were ready to go by Wednesday, I saw them myself. My best guess is that someone asked for extra strips and a class set was accidentally given out instead of just a couple extras form the extra pile. Moving forward, extra glucose test strips will be kept in a clearly labeled yellow bag within the desiccator. Class sets will continue to be packaged in small brown bags within a larger colorless bag and will also be stored in the desiccator. Sarah will update the window notes to reflect this change. GroupMe Be sure to keep an eye on the GroupMe when you are on the clock. People upstairs often rely on it to get things they need or to request help. The Prep Lab Staff expect students sitting in the office to automatically help when another student requests it in the GroupMe. We?re all in this together. Morning Unlocking There have been a few days we began unlocking later than usual. Both Linda and I are scheduled to be here in the morning. We?re both planning to work on getting in earlier (I?m up against a toddler). If one of our student leads is not on the schedule, the other students cannot begin unlocking labs until Linda or I arrive. The ALS have keys to the lab, and I have given Camila a copy of the construction core key. If the prep lab is not unlocked by 7:40, one of the ALS should be around to let you into the prep lab- you would likely be able to find them on the second or third floor. Again, we?re all in this together. Unknowns TAs are leaving partial sets of unknowns on the carts at the end of lab. Some are also trying to return unused unknowns to the lab support window. When unknowns are left on the cart after lab, the next TA is coming to the window asking for less than a whole set to supplement what they found on the cart. All unknowns except BLP-Q are packed in sets of 28. Unless additional unknown is needed during the middle of the lab session for some specific reason, only full sets of unknowns should be handed out. In most cases, we do not accept unknowns returned to the lab support window- please ask the TAs to dispose of any excess they try to return as waste. Exceptions to this policy will be communicated in my weekly emails and in the window notes. Please let us know if you have any questions. Have a great weekend! You are accountable for the entirety of all email messages sent to you by the Prep Lab Staff. Howdy y?all! Believe it or not, week 10 is just around the corner. Here?s what it has in store for us: [cid:image001.png at 01DB230C.4E7CE7F0] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. PPG We?re expecting to go through LOTS of microcentrifuge tubes this week. All rooms all have a stash of microcentrifuge tubes behind their marker boards. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if they report one is not working check the following: it?s plugged in, turned on, and the lid is fully closed. If it still doesn?t work, trade it with one of the extras in the window. Place a broken item sticker on the faulty unit. When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bucket of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it?ll take too long. EMS These will be set up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. SST pH meters?Students and pH meters don?t always get along. The lab supervisors have made significant efforts to help this. We have made some changes in how these are supplied to assist. pH meters and probes are on the bench closest to Hood A. There will be some rooms with a mix of old (black wire) and new (white wire) probes, and some rooms with only new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black wires will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new probes will need to be attached to the white cables that are already on the meters. The new probes will easily screw onto the cable (the other end is already connected to the meter), but the students may have issues with the old cables being connected to the meters. The black wires are attached to the top of the meter by pusing and turning. Both pH meters will have either a black o-ring (old probes) or a blue rubber piece (new probes) at the top of the meter to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These can stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. For pare meter or probe supplies, the 2nd floor window will have a mobile cabinet in it. The cabinet contains extra o-rings, blue rubber pieces, storage solution, probe solution for inside the old meters, extra probes, cables, and a "broken" pH probe box. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. ?Broken? meters should be placed in the labeled bin so that one of the prep lab staff can check them and make any necessary repairs. If a student has a broken old probe, they will need to pick up a cable with the new replacement probe. XUF Day 1 Students will not be running XRF analysis on their pennies, instead Sarah has done this for them. The results are on the sticker attached to each bagged penny. We will be using the blue and white spectrometers for this experiment. Pennies are in the window. Hazardous gas will be produced when the penny dissolves. If the exhaust stops working the lab room must be evacuated. The ?old UV-Vis solution? will be provided ready to use, no dilution needs to be done before analysis. SYN Day 1 Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. There is no scoop provided, students should just use a beaker from their drawer. Extra red flea size stir bars and vacuum tubing will be available in the window. Sarah and I will manage the microwave. Note that concentrated phosphoric acid is not needed for Day 1 and will not be provided. Each room will have a microscope. We will snag a tiny amount of sample from the first group to obtain crude product to put under the microscope. If students observe the temperature on the digital readout going down as they heat up their melting point apparatus, they plugged the thermocouple in the wrong way. They just need to remove it, turn it 180? and reinsert it. Replacement thermocouples will also be available in the window. Each room is limited to only 6 groups due to the layout in the microwave. If a room asks for more reaction tubes, please check they don?t have more than 6 groups before handing anything out. Any questions you cannot answer should be directed to me. Other Important Information Welcome Emma! As of Monday October 21st, Emma Lintelman will be permanently joining out team. You may have interacted with her in her previous role of Assistant Lab Supervisor. Emma will occupy the desk I have been using for the past few months. I will still be around quite a bit but will likely start using my office on the second floor again. To celebrate having a full team again, we will have cookies in the prep lab office on Monday. Recent Issues If you have not reviewed my email from Friday about recent issues, please do so. https://lists.osu.edu/pipermail/preplabstudents/2024-October/000211.html Restocking Items If you notice something is low during a lab check, or in general, please refill it. We?ve been seeing some bags of centrifuge tubes sitting next to the red bins. It may not be from us, but please be sure things go into their bins, and are not just left beside them. [cid:image001.png at 01DB2627.605AB920] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. SGR The TAs will pick up candies from the window, these will be on the unknown shelf. Students will need to use the carboy of distilled water for this one- please check the level in the carboy when you are doing your readiness checks. If it looks like it?s getting low, let us know so we can replace it. If the students need to re-smash their candies, they can do so by gently tapping the candy with an iron ring while the candy is resting on a silicone trivet. Be prepared to pass out replacement 50-mL volumetric flasks. QUL We?re expecting to go through more than 90,000 microcentrifuge tubes this week. All rooms have a significant stash of 1.7 mL microcentrifuge tubes behind their marker boards. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if they report one is not working, check the following: it?s plugged in, turned on, and the lid is fully closed. WST Second week of pH meters! pH meters and probes are still on the bench closest to Hood A. There will be some rooms with a mix of old (black wire) and new (white wire) probes, and some rooms with only new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black wires will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new probes will need to be attached to the white cables that are already on the meters. The new probes will easily screw onto the cable (the other end is already connected to the meter), but the students may have issues with connecting the old cables to the meters. The black wires are attached to the top of the meter by pushing and turning. Both pH probes will have either a black o-ring (old) or a blue rubber o-ring (new) at the top of the probe to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These can stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. The students should only remove the probe from the storage rack, not the tube. Students should replace the probe into a test tube filled with storage solution when done. Probe tips should not be allowed to dry out. For spare meter or probe supplies, the 2nd floor window will have a mobile cabinet in it. The cabinet contains extra black and blue o-rings, storage solution, fill solution for inside the old probes, extra new probes, new cables, and a "broken" pH probe box. XUF Day 2 We will be moving a large instrument into Hood A of 350. A tank of acetylene will also be clamped to the bench near this hood. While the instrument is in this hood, the orange bucket will temporarily be placed under Hood A. SYN Day 2 Be prepared to direct students to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. There is no scoop provided; students should just use an empty beaker from their drawer. Extra white pea size stir bars and vacuum tubing will be available in the window. Concentrated phosphoric acid is used for Day 2 and will be provided in Hood A. Each room will have a microscope. We will snag a tiny amount of sample from the first group to obtain crude product to put under the microscope. If the microscope says it?s not connected, you need to go into the tablet wifi settings and connect to the option that starts with M. If it asks for a password, it?s just 12345678. Any questions you cannot answer should be directed to me. Other Important Information Leaving Shifts Early As a reminder, if you need to leave a shift early, you should speak with a prep lab staff member first. Please do not just head out after completing your last task. Projector Remotes All projector remotes (except 350) have been removed. Using the remotes can cause issues with the AV control panel. All computers have been set so their displays do not go to sleep. Each room should have a white page taped to the TA bench indicating how to use the AV control panel. Lab Computers IT will be wiping the files stored on the lab computers. This should free up memory in the machines allowing them to continue to update themselves, and hopefully resolve sign-in issues we?ve been seeing. Keys Please put keys back after you use them. I know we have airtags on them, and Keyth logs who takes them. But it?s still a pain when we must hunt them down. Especially when the person that took them out of keyth isn?t on the person that has them. Happy Halloween! ?
