[Preplabstudents] Autumn 2024- Week 13

Ready or not, here comes week 13! Monday is a university holiday; the prep lab will be closed. Tuesday is same set of experiments as last week. We now start new experiments on Wednesdays.

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details.

AAP
There are a ton of white solids used in this one. Many of them come with a scoop. We will have extras in the window just in case they are needed. Additional pH paper is kept on the window cart.

GAS
Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It’s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A.

BLP
There are three unknowns per TA: one green liquid in falcon tubes, packaged solids in a black bag, and packaged solids in a clear colorless bag. We have packed all of these into white boxes. TAs just need a single box. They don’t have to return the emptied box. You’ll also be passing out printed copies of the BLP lab manual pages.

SAT
A carboy of saturated calcium hydroxide will be stirring on the bench beside Hood A. This should last all week. Students will be gravity filtering solution through P4 filter paper and a long stem funnel. This is 1910s first titration lab, be prepared to hand out burets, pipets, and pipet pumps.

Other Important Information

Reagent Requests
When someone requests a reagent from the window, be sure to find out what room they are from, what concentration is needed, and what size container is needed. Some experiments use the same reagent in different concentrations or bottle sizes. Having this info will make it easier for us to respond to the request quickly.

Veterans Day
Monday is a university holiday. The prep lab will be closed. Students are not permitted to log hours on university holidays.

Spring 2025 Schedule
You have all been added to the spring 2025 schedule on Teams. If you do not plan on returning to the prep lab for the spring semester, I need to know as soon as possible.

Same rules as previous semesters. We are using the first full week of January to schedule. You must work at least 12 hours per week unless I have approved some other arrangement. Each shift must be at least two hours in length.
