ECE Students will be using 6-sided dice for the first part of this experiment. If they need more, there should be a supply in the window. Ice will also be needed; students should be directed to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. If you notice students wearing gloves on both hands, please ask them to remove one glove. No additional commentary is needed. Please be polite- they?re still learning. MGB Model kits will be provided on the bench by Hood A. We do have replacement parts in 130 CE if needed. VOL This one has A LOT of equipment, so we?ll be putting it on the bench beside hood A. Students will be using multimeters. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the whole kit for one of the replacements in the window. Fill out a broken equipment sticker and place it on the returned unit. One of the prep lab staff members will look at the ?broken? kit. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off the electrodes. This should be done on the provided cardstock; the card stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Each room has been provided with 7 trays, since they only have 7 snorkels. HCAL GoTemp! Probes are in the lab in a drawer under the oven. USB adapters are also available in this drawer, if needed. Sarah, Emma, or I will take care of the unknown environment. Other Important Information First Floor Restroom Closure As a reminder, the first-floor restrooms in Celeste will be unavailable until sometime in January. During this time, please use the restrooms in the basement, second, third, or fourth floors. There are also restrooms in McPherson, Newman-Wolfram, and Evans. If you need help finding one, just ask. Linda?s Sink Outage To facilitate the remodel of the first-floor restrooms, the plumbing to Linda?s sink (by aisle 24) has been turned off. This includes the cold water, hot water, DI water, and drain. Signage has been posted on the sink. This outage will continue until the restroom remodel is completed. Prep Lab Closed Tuesday November 5th The prep lab will not be open on Tuesday November 5th. If you would like to make up some hours, please drop in at another time. Tuesday is same set of experiments as last week. We now start new experiments on Wednesdays. Many of them come with a scoop. We will have extras in the window just in case they are needed. Additional pH paper is kept on the window cart. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. The barometers in each room are near the thermostat (on the same wall as hood B). There are extra ring stands in each room between the ADA sink and Hood A. BLP There are three unknowns per TA: one green liquid in falcon tubes, packaged solids in a black bag, and packaged solids in a clear colorless bag. We have packed all of these into white boxes. TAs just need a single box. They don?t have to return the emptied box. You?ll also be passing out printed copies of the BLP lab manual pages. SAT A carboy of saturated calcium hydroxide will be stirring on the bench beside Hood A. This should last all week. Students will be gravity filtering solution through P4 filter paper and a long stem funnel. This is 1910s first titration lab, be prepared to hand out burets, pipets, and pipet pumps. Other Important Information Reagent Requests When someone requests a reagent from the window, be sure to find out what room they are from, what concentration is needed, and what size container is needed. Some experiments use the same reagent in different concentrations or bottle sizes. Having this info will make it easier for us to respond to the request quickly. Veterans Day Monday is a university holiday. The prep lab will be closed. Students are not permitted to log hours on university holidays. Spring 2025 Schedule You have all been added to the spring 2025 schedule on Teams. If you do not plan on returning to the prep lab for the spring semester, I need to know as soon as possible. Same rules as previous semesters. We are using the first full week of January to schedule. You must work at least 12 hours per week unless I have approved some other arrangement. We?ll start make-up labs on Wednesday. 1220 will be doing two make-up labs: students that missed BLP will be doing BLP, all other 1220 make-ups will be pKa. Below are the make-up numbers as of Sunday 11/17. (List price is ~$200 per buret) Please keep any pipet pumps that are ?leaky? or have broken off pipets in them- we should be able to salvage them. pKa pH meters and probes will be on the bench closest to Hood A. There will be some rooms with a mix of old (black wire) and new (white wire) probes, and some rooms with only new (white wire) probes. The probes with the black wires will need to be attached to the top of the meters whereas the new probes will need to be attached to the white cables that are already on the meters. The new probes will easily screw onto the cable (the other end is already connected to the meter), but the students may have issues with connecting the old cables to the meters. The black wires are attached to the top of the meter by pushing and turning. Both pH probes will have either a black o-ring (old) or a blue rubber o-ring (new) at the top of the probe to cushion it from the glass storage tube and help seal in the storage solution. These o-rings can stay at the top of the probes while the students are taking readings. The students should only remove the probe from the storage rack, not the tube. Students should replace the probe into a test tube filled with storage solution when done. Probe tips should not be allowed to dry out. For spare meter or probe supplies, the 2nd floor window will have a mobile cabinet in it. The cabinet contains extra black and blue o-rings, storage solution, fill solution for inside the old probes, extra new probes, new cables, and a "broken" pH probe box. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. ?Broken? meters should be placed in the labeled bin so that one of the prep lab staff can check them and make any necessary repairs. If a student has a broken old probe, they will need to pick up a cable when obtaining a new replacement probe. This experiment uses two unknown weak acid solutions. We will be providing these on the reagent carts. Signage above the shelf these are stored in will tell you what solution should be used to refill these bottles. BLP TAs will let you know how many students they have completing BLP. Please give them one Q tube, one R sample, one S sample, and one printed copy of BLP manual pages per student completing the BLP make-up. DO NOT GIVE OUT A WHOLE SET.
