Howdy folks!

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details.

PPG
We’re expecting to go through lots of test tubes and small corks this week. All rooms all have a stash of corks and test tubes behind their white boards. We no longer stock disposable test tubes in the windows. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if the report one is not working check the following: it’s plugged in, turned, on, the lid is closed, and the speed knob is not set to zero. If it still doesn’t work, let us know and we’ll swap it out. When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bucket of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it takes too long.

LLT
Be prepared to hand out lots of burets, pipets, blue bulbs, and blue stoppers. Remember that the pipets and blue bulbs are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the pipets and bulbs. Blue stoppers are in one of the drawers within the window room. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. If the drip tray gets full, let us know so that we can take care of it.

IHT
Materials will be available on the reagent cart. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on the cups and lids and refill, as necessary. Additional cups and lids are available in the window.

SAL
TAs will pick up sets of salts at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Colorless empty centrifuge tubes will be available on the reagent carts. Extras will be in the windows. Only empty centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. We will swap out the blue buckets at the end of each day.

HCAL
Materials will be available on the reagent cart. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on the cups and lids and refill, as necessary. Additional cups and lids are available in the window. GoTemp! Probes are in the lab in a drawer under the oven. USB adapters are also available in this drawer, if needed.

BAR
The UV-Vis spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the reagent cart and should be returned to the cart after use. Be prepared to replace the volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken.

Other Important Information-

Questions, Etc.

At this point in the semester, I expect you all to have a working knowledge of how things are done in our spaces. If you are ever unsure about how to do something, where something is/goes, or have any safety concerns please be sure to talk with a prep lab staff member.

>From this point forward, please direct all questions to Linda, Tyler, Alec, or Sophie. MJ has a lot of solutions to prepare and refill, and diverting these questions will help her focus on those solutions.

Blue Bucket Inserts

The little cards that are put in the pockets on the blue buckets now have a permanent home in the tiny drawers on the end cap of aisle 26 and 27.

Shift Switches

Please remember that the GroupMe is great for finding someone to cover your shift(s), but you still need to send an email to the preplabstaff email list regardless of whether a replacement was found.

Hours During Break (Spring & Summer)

The prep lab will be open M-R of spring break. If you are around and would like to get some hours in, please drop by.

We will also be open over the summer, with lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-3:00. We like to have students around during the entire week. Summer tends to be much more relaxed. We work on other projects when lab is not in session.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Best,
Tyler
