Week 9 starts tomorrow: [cid:image002.png at 01DA6D54.BBF92A00] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. PPG We?re expecting to go through lots of test tubes and small corks this week. All rooms all have a stash of corks and test tubes behind their white boards. We no longer stock disposable test tubes in the windows. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if the report one is not working check the following: it?s plugged in, turned, on, the lid is closed, and the speed knob is not set to zero. If it still doesn?t work, let us know and we?ll swap it out. When doing cart checks for this experiment, swap the entire bucket of reagents regardless of fill level. Do not check individual bottles- it takes too long. LLT Be prepared to hand out lots of burets, pipets, blue bulbs, and blue stoppers. Remember that the pipets and blue bulbs are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the pipets and bulbs. Blue stoppers are in one of the drawers within the window room. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. If the drip tray gets full, let us know so that we can take care of it. IHT Materials will be available on the reagent cart. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on the cups and lids and refill, as necessary. Additional cups and lids are available in the window. SAL TAs will pick up sets of salts at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. Colorless empty centrifuge tubes will be available on the reagent carts. Extras will be in the windows. Only empty centrifuge tubes should be placed in the blue bucket. We will swap out the blue buckets at the end of each day. HCAL Materials will be available on the reagent cart. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on the cups and lids and refill, as necessary. Additional cups and lids are available in the window. GoTemp! Probes are in the lab in a drawer under the oven. USB adapters are also available in this drawer, if needed. BAR The UV-Vis spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the reagent cart and should be returned to the cart after use. Be prepared to replace the volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken. Other Important Information- Questions, Etc. At this point in the semester, I expect you all to have a working knowledge of how things are done in our spaces. If you are ever unsure about how to do something, where something is/goes, or have any safety concerns please be sure to talk with a prep lab staff member. >From this point forward, please direct all questions to Linda, Tyler, Alec, or Sophie. MJ has a lot of solutions to prepare and refill, and diverting these questions will help her focus on those solutions. Blue Bucket Inserts The little cards that are put in the pockets on the blue buckets now have a permanent home in the tiny drawers on the end cap of aisle 26 and 27. Shift Switches Please remember that the GroupMe is great for finding someone to cover your shift(s), but you still need to send an email to the preplabstaff email list regardless of whether a replacement was found. Hours During Break (Spring & Summer) The prep lab will be open M-R of spring break. If you are around and would like to get some hours in, please drop by. We will also be open over the summer, with lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-3:00. We like to have students around during the entire week. Summer tends to be much more relaxed. We work on other projects when lab is not in session. Let us know if you have any questions. SGR The students will need to use a carboy of distilled water for this one- please check the level in the carboy when you are doing your readiness checks. IHT Materials will be available on the reagent cart. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on the cups and lids and refill, as necessary. Additional cups and lids are available in the window. EMS Sophie and Alec have set these up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. SST pH meters?Students and pH meters don?t always get along. pH meters with probes are on the reagent carts. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Sophie and Alec will have replacements in the windows. ?Broken? meters should be placed in the labeled bin so that one of the prep lab staff can check them and make any necessary repairs. Extra wetting caps are available in each window, these are the little bottles that the probe tips are stored in. We also have extra storage solution, the liquid that goes into the wetting cap, in each window if needed. BAR The UV-Vis spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the reagent cart and should be returned to the cart after use. Be prepared to replace the volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken. CLK This one should be quicker than in past years, but don?t be surprised if they take the whole lab session. Flip thermometers will be on the cart. Extra thermometers will be in the window, as will extra batteries. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. Other Important Information- Questions, Etc. >From this point forward, please direct all questions to Linda, Tyler, Alec, or Sophie. MJ has a lot of solutions to prepare and refill, and diverting your questions to the other prep lab staff will help her focus on those solutions. Science Olympiad- Volunteers Needed! We need volunteers for the Ohio Science Olympiad State Tournament. that will be held on Saturday, April 27th. Chemistry and Biochemistry will host 4 events in our gen chem lab spaces, so we need a lot of people who can help us manage everything. If you decided to volunteer, you will help us with proctoring, grading, making sure the lab rooms are clean after all participants leave. For your participation, you will receive a free T-shirt, a boxed lunch (usually a sandwich, chips, and a cookie), and get to spend part of a Saturday with Tyler, Alec, and Sophie in Celeste! There will also likely be other snacks and entertaining conversation. If you are interested in joining us, please complete this google doc. AND the Science Olympiad Volunteer Form. Shift switches and call offs Please remember that a covered shift is not official until an email is sent to the prep lab staff and the person covering the shift is cc?d. Please also send us a message if you are not going to make it to your shift. It helps us a lot to know for sure who wont be around. Spill kit swaps Moving forward, please be sure to process any spill kits you bring downstairs. Our goal is for all of the spill kits under the carboy table to be ready for use. Let us know if you have any questions. [cid:image001.png at 01DA8392.2020DF20] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes and gather sheets for additional details. ECE Students will be using 6-sided dice for the first part of this experiment. If they need more, there should be a supply in the window. Ice will also be needed; students should be directed to the ice machine outside of the restrooms. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. It?s ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing and bins for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the windows. BLP There are three unknowns per TA: one green liquid in falcon tubes, packaged solids in a black bag, and packaged solids in a clear colorless bag. The solids are already in sets of 28. The green liquid is in sets of 25- so if a TA has more than 25 students, they need to tell you how many extra tubes they?ll need. You?ll also be passing out printed copies of the BLP lab manual pages. If you are low on copies, please check the other window first. We?re going to go through a lot of blue bucket for this one. LCP We?ll need to put a cooler of ice on the third floor- it should be filled from the machine on the first floor. Be prepared to replace burets, 5 mL pipets, and blue bulbs. Other Important Information- Summer The prep lab will be open over the summer. We will have labs running on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30am-2:55pm. We?re happy to have as many of you around as possible. We?ll spend non-lab days working on packing unknowns and getting yearly tasks completed. The schedule is flexible, and we currently don?t have anyone that has committed to working over the summer. If you are interested, or have any questions, please let me know. Remainder of Spring Schedule We will have normal hours the week of 4/1-4/5. On 4/8 we will open at 7:30am and close at noon. 4/9-4/22 we will open at 8:00am and close at 6:00pm. 4/23 is our end of semester party in 1015 McPherson lab.
