Hi Everyone,
We had a decent first week! Let’s keep things moving in a positive direction.

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details.
DAG- Materials will be provided on the cart. Be prepared to provide replacement plastic 50 mL graduated cylinders. The students like to put these in their drawers instead of returning them to the cart.
SCM- Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for replacement pipets, beakers, and blue bulbs. Restock the cart as needed. Burets are in the back of the window.
CPC- CPC is a unique experience for everyone involved :)
- The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts.
- The apparatus needs to be checked every 30 minutes by someone from the window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video<https://youtu.be/a8J57oDHy_I> shows how add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask properly.
- We’ll need to put a cooler of ice on the third floor- it can be filled from the machine on the first or second floor.
SOL- Keep an eye on the 25 mL test tubes and weigh boats during your lab readiness checks. These items will likely need to be restocked throughout the week. Replacements are available behind the white boards.
LCP- We’ll need to put a cooler of ice on the third floor- it can be filled from the machine on the first floor or second floor.
Other Important Information-
Emails
Please be sure to use the preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu<mailto:preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu> email address when sending a message about attendance, etc. This goes to all the prep lab staff to ensure its seen within a reasonable time frame.
Private matters can still be sent directly to me.
Shift Switches
Using the GroupMe to find someone to take your shift is a great option, but please remember that shift switches are not official until an email is sent to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu<mailto:preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu>. You should also cc the person that took your shift on this email to be sure they are also in the loop.
GroupMe Replies
The GroupMe is a great place to request reagents, spill kits, etc. The person running the supplies up, etc. should reply to the original message so that we all know it has been resolved.
Cart Moves
It looks like we missed some cart moves this week. It’s super important that these are done. Sometimes students will start to use the wrong chemicals, and this can be a serious safety issue. Cart moves are assigned on the Daily Sheet. If you are assigned a window shift, you need to check to see if you are assigned cart moves. After this week, anyone that misses a cart move will need to have a meeting with me.
White Can and Glass Runs
Waste should be dumped after completing waste runs. If you need help please ask any of the prep lab staff or other students.
Ice
On the second floor, ice is available from the ice machine by the bathrooms. During weeks that use a lot of ice, it’s helpful for someone from the window to periodically break up clumps in the machine so that it can keep producing ice. If the bin is getting perilously low, call downstairs (or put a message in the GroupMe). We can transfer some ice from the 130 CE ice machine into the second-floor ice machine.
On the third floor, ice is provided in coolers that are filled from 130 CE or the first floor of Evans Lab. On heavy weeks, it’s advisable to have three coolers available. Check the ice levels in the coolers regularly. Call downstairs (or message in the GroupMe) if your coolers need refilled. The easiest option is to put the coolers into the freight elevator and send them to the first floor. Someone on the first floor will get them from the elevator, fill them, and send them back up. Coolers should be placed on the blue carpet in the hallway across from the window.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANYONE CONSUME THE ICE FROM ANY ICE MACHINE IN CELESTE.
Best,
Tyler
