[Preplabstudents] Spring 2024- Week 1

Hi Everyone,

We hope you had a safe and relaxing winter break! Monday is the first day of the spring semester and will be the first day we will follow our spring schedule. Everyone should report to room 145 Celeste for the beginning of their assigned shifts. Please also be sure to wear lab appropriate attire (closed toe/heel shoes, long pants/skirt, etc.). We will provide you all with fresh lab coats.

We have six new students joining our team. Please welcome Amanda, Claire, Kourtney, Lila, Nika, Peyton, and Xander if you see them.

Note that only chem 1208 is meeting this week, and they won’t be using any chemicals.

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details.

1208 Open House- TA will pick up goggles, lab manuals, and potentially other handouts from the window. No chemicals will be used. 1208 only meets in room 210.

Other Important Information-

Goggles

If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their “normal” goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. If the OTG goggles still don’t work, have an ALS (Assistant Lab Supervisor) talk with the student. We have a small number of other options we can try.

Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box litter. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Extra trash bags are available in both windows.

Renovation Related Info

PPE baskets have been moved into 130 CE. 140, 150, and 160 CE are off limits to prep lab students as they are doing work in the ceilings.

We have not yet moved our chemicals into 130 CE. We are waiting to finalize a few things about the space. An official move-in date is still TBD.

The third floor restrooms are out of service- they are being renovated. Please use the restrooms on the first, second, and fourth floors.

Reminders

We will be moving back into our lab soon, please remember that PPE will be required when crossing over the blue line on the floor.

Procedural Changes

New radios have been installed in the windows. A photo is shown below. These are plugged into an outlet, and don’t have a batter; hopefully this mitigates the dead battery issues we’ve had.

When you need to use it, push the power button on the top (in the center), then push the button on the side to talk. We will leave the radio powered off when not needed.
