Monday is the first day of the spring semester and will be the first day we will follow our spring schedule. Everyone should report to room 145 Celeste for the beginning of their assigned shifts. Please also be sure to wear lab appropriate attire (closed toe/heel shoes, long pants/skirt, etc.). We will provide you all with fresh lab coats. We have six new students joining our team. Please welcome Amanda, Claire, Kourtney, Lila, Nika, Peyton, and Xander if you see them. Note that only chem 1208 is meeting this week, and they won?t be using any chemicals. [A table with red green and black text Description automatically generated] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. 1208 Open House- TA will pick up goggles, lab manuals, and potentially other handouts from the window. No chemicals will be used. 1208 only meets in room 210. Other Important Information- Goggles If students need goggles that fit over their glasses, they can swap their ?normal? goggles at the window for a pair of OTG goggles. If the OTG goggles still don?t work, have an ALS (Assistant Lab Supervisor) talk with the student. We have a small number of other options we can try. Everyone should be keeping an eye out for goggle box litter. Please help keep our trash under control by picking up anything you see. Extra trash bags are available in both windows. Renovation Related Info PPE baskets have been moved into 130 CE. 140, 150, and 160 CE are off limits to prep lab students as they are doing work in the ceilings. We have not yet moved our chemicals into 130 CE. We are waiting to finalize a few things about the space. An official move-in date is still TBD. The third floor restrooms are out of service- they are being renovated. Please use the restrooms on the first, second, and fourth floors. Reminders We will be moving back into our lab soon, please remember that PPE will be required when crossing over the blue line on the floor. Procedural Changes New radios have been installed in the windows. A photo is shown below. These are plugged into an outlet, and don?t have a batter; hopefully this mitigates the dead battery issues we?ve had. When you need to use it, push the power button on the top (in the center), then push the button on the side to talk. We will leave the radio powered off when not needed. Note, we will be replacing Keyth in the coming weeks. Instructions on using the new Keyth will be sent once the new unit is installed. Timesheets Be sure to submit your timesheets at the end of each week. Timesheets should be submitted no later than noon on the following Monday. Information on how to submit timesheets is available at the link below. https://admin.resources.osu.edu/workday/workday-for-employees/time-entry-processes I?m new! What should I do when I arrive? The first thing you should do when you arrive for a shift is check the Daily Sheet to see if you have been assigned to the window, and/or what tasks you have been assigned. If there are any schedule conflicts let us know and we?ll get it fixed. Some students like to take photos of the daily sheet, some the assignments on post-its, do whatever works best for you. If you are assigned to the window, be sure to take you lab coat. You do not need to wear your lab coat in the window, only if you are going into one of the lab rooms. If you have any questions about how to do something, please ask any of the other student employees or any of the staff. We are here to support eachother. Handwashing Be sure to wash your hands after completing a lab task. Handwashing can also help to prevent illnesses and the spread of infections to others. Let?s keep things moving in a positive direction. [A close-up of a chart Description automatically generated] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. DAG- Materials will be provided on the cart. Be prepared to provide replacement plastic 50 mL graduated cylinders. The students like to put these in their drawers instead of returning them to the cart. SCM- Be prepared to direct students to the window cart for replacement pipets, beakers, and blue bulbs. Restock the cart as needed. Burets are in the back of the window. CPC- CPC is a unique experience for everyone involved :) - The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. - The apparatus needs to be checked every 30 minutes by someone from the window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask properly. - We?ll need to put a cooler of ice on the third floor- it can be filled from the machine on the first or second floor. SOL- Keep an eye on the 25 mL test tubes and weigh boats during your lab readiness checks. These items will likely need to be restocked throughout the week. Replacements are available behind the white boards. LCP- We?ll need to put a cooler of ice on the third floor- it can be filled from the machine on the first floor or second floor. Other Important Information- Emails Please be sure to use the preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu email address when sending a message about attendance, etc. This goes to all the prep lab staff to ensure its seen within a reasonable time frame. Private matters can still be sent directly to me. Shift Switches Using the GroupMe to find someone to take your shift is a great option, but please remember that shift switches are not official until an email is sent to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu. You should also cc the person that took your shift on this email to be sure they are also in the loop. GroupMe Replies The GroupMe is a great place to request reagents, spill kits, etc. The person running the supplies up, etc. should reply to the original message so that we all know it has been resolved. Cart Moves It looks like we missed some cart moves this week. It?s super important that these are done. Sometimes students will start to use the wrong chemicals, and this can be a serious safety issue. Cart moves are assigned on the Daily Sheet. If you are assigned a window shift, you need to check to see if you are assigned cart moves. After this week, anyone that misses a cart move will need to have a meeting with me. White Can and Glass Runs Waste should be dumped after completing waste runs. If you need help please ask any of the prep lab staff or other students. Ice On the second floor, ice is available from the ice machine by the bathrooms. During weeks that use a lot of ice, it?s helpful for someone from the window to periodically break up clumps in the machine so that it can keep producing ice. If the bin is getting perilously low, call downstairs (or put a message in the GroupMe). We can transfer some ice from the 130 CE ice machine into the second-floor ice machine. On the third floor, ice is provided in coolers that are filled from 130 CE or the first floor of Evans Lab. On heavy weeks, it?s advisable to have three coolers available. Check the ice levels in the coolers regularly. Call downstairs (or message in the GroupMe) if your coolers need refilled. The easiest option is to put the coolers into the freight elevator and send them to the first floor. Someone on the first floor will get them from the elevator, fill them, and send them back up. Coolers should be placed on the blue carpet in the hallway across from the window. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANYONE CONSUME THE ICE FROM ANY ICE MACHINE IN CELESTE. This resulted in the chem 1220 section in this room not having the chemicals needed for class. I?m hoping this was caught in the lab readiness check. Recall that we do these to catch mistakes before they can affect the students. Mistakes happen, but we should try to avoid them as much as possible. Please be sure you are removing and changing the chemicals on the correct carts. Remember, we keep mini versions of the daily sheet in the windows, feel free to double check if needed. Here?s the latest news and information for members of the gen chem prep lab. [A close-up of a sign Description automatically generated] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. SHM- Materials will be available on the reagent cart. Cups and lids will be in a red dispenser by the balances. When completing lab readiness checks, please keep an eye on this and refill, as necessary. Additional cups and lids are available in the window. EMS- Sophie and Alec will have set these up on the bench beside Hood A. Replacement parts are available in the window. SCM- Be prepared to hand out lots of burets, pipets, blue bulbs, and beakers. Remember that the pipets, blue bulbs, and beakers are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low. FPD- Freezing point apparatus will be on the reagent carts. Replacement parts will be in the windows. Note that the inner tubes in this apparatus is just the 50 mL tubes we keep on the window cart. SAL- clear microcentrifuge tubes will be available on the reagent cart. Other Important Information- Wearing PPE in the office Please remember that nobody should be wearing their PPE in the office space. The office space is a clean area where eating is permitted. If we continue to see PPE being worn in these spaces, we will no longer be permitted to eat in the office space. Mini Daily Sheet in 130 As mentioned in the GroupMe, we now have a mini daily sheet in 130. Our hope is that this can be referenced when in the lab so you don?t have to take your PPE off to look at the big version in the office. Laminated ?this experiment uses a blue bucket? cards We tend to struggle with remembering to put up the blue buckets for experiments that use them. We now have blue laminated cards, kept with the pink and yellow gather signs. The blue card should be included in the bin for any new gather that uses a blue bucket. The gather sheet will note if a blue bucket is needed. Additional information about ice We?re going to go through A TON of ice this week. The third floor will need coolers of ice. The second floor will use the ice machine by the bathrooms. Again, if the coolers need refilled, please call down to let us know. Place the cooler in the elevator and we?ll send it back up once filled. Please keep an eye on the second-floor ice machine. Students tend to pull ice from the front, leaving a mound in the back that tricks the machine into thinking it?s still full. Periodically use the scoop to flatten the remaining ice so there is room for fresh ice to be made. That said, if the machine is getting precariously low, call down or send a message in the GroupMe. We will bring up a couple buckets of ice from the prep lab or Evans to bridge the gap and allow the machine to catch up with demand.
