Hi everyone!

Week 8 is up next. Here’s what it has in store for us:

Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details.

STO
TA demo kits are on the reagent carts. These now include a jar of sand for smothering Mg fire if it gets out of control. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if the report one is not working check the following: its plugged in, turned, on, the lid is closed, and the speed knob is not set to zero. If it still doesn’t work, let us know and we’ll swap it out.

CYC
This is a quick one! pH paper will be on the reagent carts. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window cart. TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf.

LLT
Be prepared to hand out lots of burets, pipets, blue bulbs, and blue stoppers. Remember that the pipets and blue bulbs are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the pipets and bulbs. Blue stoppers are in one of the drawers within the window room. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. If the drip tray gets full, let us know so that we can take care of it.

LCP
We’ll need to put two coolers of ice on the third floor- it should be filled from the machine on the first floor.

VOL
This one has A LOT of equipment, so we’ll be putting it on the bench beside hood A. Students will be using multimeters. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the whole kit for one of the replacements in the window. Alec and Sophie will look at the “broken” kit. Its important with these to note what was not working. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off of the electrodes. This should be done on the provided cardstock; the card stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel.

Other Important Information-

Check Reagent Labels
The incorrect concentration of potassium permanganate was gathered for a cart check on Wednesday afternoon. We had a separate issue on Friday with the new gather in which the incorrect reagent was gathered (iron chloride instead of copper chloride). It’s critical that you check the concentration and identity of the reagent is what is listed on the gather sheet. Do not just rely on the color of the liquid and/or shape of the bottle. Many bottles look alike, grabbing the incorrect reagent can be a significant safety hazard.

I want to be clear here. I don’t expect us to have a perfect operation. I do expect us to work as a team and look out for each other. Our goal is to catch any mistakes that do happen before they make it upstairs. Ask questions when you have them. We’re all in this together.

Waste Aprons
Hanging the aprons was not working too well in our new setup. We are now going to try folding them and storing them in the designated bins. When folding the aprons, please be sure you fold the dirty side on itself first and leave the clean side exposed.

Blue Buckets & Gather Sheets
I want to provide some clarification here. We added the blue buckets as a new gather item on the gather sheets, no *. They do not need to be gathered when doing a cart check gather. Our goal was to improve our record of deploying blue buckets, and this seems to be helping.

Padlocks
I also want to provide some clarification on when cabinets in 130 CE should be padlocked. Cabinets that are needed for a particular week’s experiment will be left unlocked for that week. Once they are no longer needed, they will be relocked. Note that the poison, acid, and base cabinets will never be left unlocked for any reason.

Plastic Bags
All our plastic bags have now been moved into 130 CE. This is the only approved place for storing plastic bags on the first floor, so if you need any size, including lab coat bags, please grab them from aisle 26. They are sorted by size and color.

Save The Date!
Our end of semester party will be on reading day, April 23rd, at 3:30 PM in room 1015 McPherson Lab. I just ordered the pizza, and yes, I also ordered the chocolate chip cookies😊

Prep Lab Book Club
It looks like Mackenzie is starting up a prep lab book club. Feel free to sign up if interested. This is not mandatory, just for fun. This is not something that can be included on your timesheet. I’ve set up a Carmen discussion thread for sign-ups and other info:
