This week is lighter than normal. We?re giving Monday a chance to catch up. When we don?t have much going on we will be working on locker checks and other housekeeping items to better prepare us for the rest of the semester. [A close-up of a chart Description automatically generated] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. LLT- Be prepared to hand out lots of burets, pipets, blue bulbs, and blue stoppers. Remember that the pipets and blue bulbs are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the pipets and bulbs. Blue stoppers are in one of the drawers within the window room. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. If the drip tray gets full, let us know so that we can take care of it. Keep an eye on the buret reading cards when completing your lab readiness checks. Refills are available behind the whiteboards. Other Important Information- Metal salts drum gauge We?ve had a couple of students ask some questions about the gauge on the metal salts barrel. Its normal for the gauge to not move until the barrel is nearly full. You?ll know the barrel is full when the red ring is at the same height as the blue ring. Please be sure to place filled in waste tags in the plastic bin beside the barrel the waste was dumped into. Blank waste tags, and a few extra zip ties are available on the post where we keep the pink and yellow gather signs. Lab debris, glass, and spill kit barrels As mentioned in the GroupMe, we need to segregate our lab debris waste. We keep barrels for plastics, glass, and paper. The blue sticker on the lid indicates what should go in the barrel. You can also always take a peek into the barrel to see what should go into it. Dumping waste after a run I mentioned this in a previous email. Please be sure to dump your waste after completing your waste run. Yes, one person needs to wear the dumping suit. The only time its acceptable to not dump waste is if its after 9:30pm on nights we are open until 10pm or on a Friday if its after 6:00pm. Window items There is a directory of where items are placed in the window. Please consult this directory before sending a message in the GroupMe. Alec and Sophie will also be adding shelf positions to commonly needed items on the window notes. Sorry this is late! [A close-up of a chart Description automatically generated] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. MML Model kits will be provided on the bottom of the reagent carts. We do have replacement parts in each window if needed. CPC The distillation apparatus needs to be unplugged when not in use. Ideally, the pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 10-15 minutes before the lab session starts. The apparatus needs to be checked every 30 minutes by someone from the window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourselves. This video shows how add ice and transfer water from the receiving flask to the heating flask properly. PbI Solid reagents will be handed out from the windows. Vacuum tubing is in a drawer at each station. Extras will be available at each window. We?ll be using the vacuum ports for this experiment; the TAs do not need to turn the pump on or off- it will take care of itself. We will be using the ovens; they open by pulling the bottom of the handle up towards the ceiling- no rotating required. BAR The UV-Vis spectrometers are behind the white boards in each room. Cuvettes and volumetric flasks will be on the reagent cart and should be returned to the cart after use. Be prepared to replace the volumetric flasks, they occasionally get broken. LLT Be prepared to hand out lots of burets, pipets, blue bulbs, and blue stoppers. Remember that the pipets and blue bulbs are available on the window cart. Please refill the window cart when things start to get low- this goes for all items on the window cart, not just the pipets and bulbs. Blue stoppers are in one of the drawers within the window room. Keep an eye on the buret reading cards when completing your lab readiness checks. Refills are available behind the whiteboards. GAS Each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. Its ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer at the window for Part C. Extra tubing for the gas collection apparatus will be available in the window. SST pH meters?Students and pH meters don?t always get along. pH meters with probes are on the reagent carts. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Sophie and Alec will have replacements in the windows. ?Broken? meters should be placed in the labeled bin so that one of the prep lab staff can check them and make any necessary repairs. Extra wetting caps are available in each window, these are the little bottles that the probe tips are stored in. We also have extra storage solution, the liquid that goes into the wetting cap, in each window if needed. Other Important Information- Carts have wheels I?ve seen some folks carrying bottles over to carts. Remember that our carts have wheels and can very easily be pushed over to where they are most useful. I?ve been told some things that don?t make us look good: -Prep lab students were asking Lab Supervisors how to do prep lab maintenance duties. -Some water/ice buckets had so little water in them the pump was making a grinding noise. -The discharge tube coming from the condenser was not in the water/ice bucket and all the water was pumped down the drain. This is not acceptable. It sounds like some of you have not watched the video on setup and maintenance of this apparatus. The link is pasted below for your convenience. Week 7 is up next. Here?s what it has in store for us: [cid:image001.png at 01DA6260.FDB32710] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. STR This is a fun one and its quick! Nothing should be needed from the window. The waste is organic and will be disposed of in the 4 L bottle fitted with the lidded funnel inside Hood A. We don?t expect the waste bottle to be completely filled- so no organic waste runs will be scheduled- if the bottle does get filled, please call downstairs or send a message in the GroupMe and ask for a replacement. The organic waste container and the beakers with handles are now in the lab rooms? PbI Solid reagents will be handed out from the windows. Vacuum tubing is in a drawer at each station. Extras will be available at each window. We?ll be using the vacuum ports for this experiment; the TAs do not need to turn the pump on or off- it will take care of itself. We will be using the ovens; they open by pulling the bottom of the handle up towards the ceiling- no rotating required. CYC This is a quick one! pH paper will be on the reagent carts. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window cart. TAs will pick up samples of CuO at the start of lab. These will be kept in the labeled bin on the unknown shelf. Unknown bins should not be removed from the unknown shelf. CLK This one should be quicker than in past years, but don?t be surprised if they take the whole lab session. Flip thermometers will be on the cart. Extra thermometers will be in the window, as will extra batteries. This one usually uses a bunch of spill kits. We?ll be ramping up the number kept in each window for the week. Keep on top of them. MGB Model kits will be provided on the bottom of the reagent carts. We do have replacement parts in each window if needed. WST pH meters?Students and pH meters don?t always get along. pH meters with probes are on the reagent carts. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Extra wetting caps are available in each window, these are the little bottles that the probe tips are stored in. We also have extra storage solution, the liquid that goes into the wetting cap, in each window if needed. Other Important Information- Gathers Please be sure you are collecting the correct solutions in the correct container sizes. Cart Checks and Cart Changes We?ll be making a slight modification to the gather sheets to improve our blue bucket performance. Blue buckets will now be part of a new gather. Please also remember that if you are assigned a cart check or cart change, you should check the items gathered for you against the gather sheet. Make sure you have the correct reagents in the correct quantities. Any issues should be corrected before you head upstairs. Equipment on Carts Please remember that ?CART CHANGE? and ?REMOVE ALL CHEMICALS? does not include removal of equipment. Alec, Sophie, or Tyler will take care of equipment. Headphones, Videos, and Games Headphones use, watching any videos (regardless of whether its for class), and playing games are not permitted while on the clock. IF you have nothing to do ask one of the prep lab staff if there is anything that needs to be done? there?s almost always something. Verify/Update Personal Information During your shift this week, please check in with Linda. She will have you verify the information we have for you. This includes your ID number, lab coat size, anticipated graduation semester, and emergency contact information. She will make updates to this info, as necessary. Week 8 is up next. Here?s what it has in store for us: [cid:image002.png at 01DA680F.49023310] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. STO TA demo kits are on the reagent carts. These now include a jar of sand for smothering Mg fire if it gets out of control. The students will be using the centrifuges for this- if the report one is not working check the following: its plugged in, turned, on, the lid is closed, and the speed knob is not set to zero. If it still doesn?t work, let us know and we?ll swap it out. CYC This is a quick one! pH paper will be on the reagent carts. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window cart. The 0.44 M NaOH carboy should be kept on the special carboy spill tray. If the drip tray gets full, let us know so that we can take care of it. LCP We?ll need to put two coolers of ice on the third floor- it should be filled from the machine on the first floor. VOL This one has A LOT of equipment, so we?ll be putting it on the bench beside hood A. Students will be using multimeters. If they report that one is not working properly, please just swap the whole kit for one of the replacements in the window. Alec and Sophie will look at the ?broken? kit. Its important with these to note what was not working. The students will be sanding the oxidation layer off of the electrodes. This should be done on the provided cardstock; the card stock should be placed on the provided black plastic tray. The whole sanding procedure should be done under a snorkel. Other Important Information- Check Reagent Labels The incorrect concentration of potassium permanganate was gathered for a cart check on Wednesday afternoon. We had a separate issue on Friday with the new gather in which the incorrect reagent was gathered (iron chloride instead of copper chloride). It?s critical that you check the concentration and identity of the reagent is what is listed on the gather sheet. Do not just rely on the color of the liquid and/or shape of the bottle. Many bottles look alike, grabbing the incorrect reagent can be a significant safety hazard. I want to be clear here. I don?t expect us to have a perfect operation. I do expect us to work as a team and look out for each other. Our goal is to catch any mistakes that do happen before they make it upstairs. Ask questions when you have them. We?re all in this together. Waste Aprons Hanging the aprons was not working too well in our new setup. We are now going to try folding them and storing them in the designated bins. When folding the aprons, please be sure you fold the dirty side on itself first and leave the clean side exposed. Blue Buckets & Gather Sheets I want to provide some clarification here. We added the blue buckets as a new gather item on the gather sheets, no *. They do not need to be gathered when doing a cart check gather. Our goal was to improve our record of deploying blue buckets, and this seems to be helping. Padlocks I also want to provide some clarification on when cabinets in 130 CE should be padlocked. Cabinets that are needed for a particular week?s experiment will be left unlocked for that week. Once they are no longer needed, they will be relocked. Note that the poison, acid, and base cabinets will never be left unlocked for any reason. Plastic Bags All our plastic bags have now been moved into 130 CE. This is the only approved place for storing plastic bags on the first floor, so if you need any size, including lab coat bags, please grab them from aisle 26. They are sorted by size and color. Save The Date! Our end of semester party will be on reading day, April 23rd, at 3:30 PM in room 1015 McPherson Lab. I just ordered the pizza, and yes, I also ordered the chocolate chip cookies? Prep Lab Book Club It looks like Mackenzie is starting up a prep lab book club. Feel free to sign up if interested. This is not mandatory, just for fun.
