Week 5 is already upon us!

This email is a long one but should be read in its entirety. You are accountable for the information below.

Experiment Highlights:

STR

This is a fun one and its quick! Nothing should be needed from the window. The waste is organic and will be disposed of in the 4 L glass bottle fitted with the lidded funnel. We don’t expect the waste bottle to be completely filled- so no organic waste runs will be scheduled- if the bottle does get filled, please call downstairs or send a message in the GroupMe and ask for a replacement. The organic waste container and the beakers with handles are now in the lab rooms…

CYC

This is a quick one! pH paper will be on the reagent carts. If more pH paper is needed it can be obtained from the window cart.

CLK

This one should be quicker than in the past, but don’t be surprised if they take the whole lab session. Flip thermometers will be on the cart. Extra thermometers will be in the window, sometimes they accidentally get burned. Check the window notes for details on what to do with burned thermometers.

LLT

Extra pipets, burets, and blue bulbs are on the window cart. Please refill the window cart as needed.

XUF Day 2

Alec and Sophie will be moving a large instrument into Hood A of 330 on Monday evening. It will include a tank of acetylene. While the instrument is in this hood, the orange bucket will temporarily be placed under the hood.

Daily Sheet Task Modifications- Effective Immediately

Cart Changes- for this semester we will be modifying the cart change assignment. This semester if you are assigned a cart change, you will only be putting up the new chemicals listed on the gather sheet and collected in the New Gather. You will not be removing anything from the cart.

Remove Old Chemicals- This is a new assignment. The Daily Sheet will indicate which rooms you are going to visit and which experiment’s chemicals you will be removing. Start by grabbing a gather sheet for the appropriate experiment. Then, grab a cart lined with tubs, and head upstairs to the assigned rooms. Only remove the chemicals associated with the experiment you were assigned to remove. After you have visited each assigned room, head back downstairs and leave the cart of chemicals in 140/150 CE.

Empty Buckets/Cans- Often in the evenings we do not have time to empty all the waste buckets and cans that were collected before its time to close. This assignment is to simply empty out any white cans, orange buckets, or green buckets that were collected and have waste in them. Proper PPE must be worn.

Other Important Information:

Games, Movies, TV, Headphones, etc.

Remember, you are not permitted to play games and/or watch videos while on the clock. You are also not permitted to wear headphones or earbuds.

Cart Moves

As a reminder, Cart Moves are listed under the window schedule section of the Daily Sheet. A person will be assigned to each time and floor. It is possible there are no moves scheduled for an assigned time. If there are the assigned person is responsible for completing the cart moves and initialing the mini Daily Sheet (in your window) when done. If no moves are scheduled, the assigned person must initial the mini Daily Sheet (in your window) indicating the cart moves sheet was checked.

Shift Switches

I want to be sure we are all on the same page with shift switches. If you know you are going to miss a shift, please reach out to the other students to see if anyone can take the shift from you. Once someone indicates they are willing to take it, please send an email to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu<mailto:preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu> to let us know. You should cc the student(s) taking your shift as well.

If you are not able to find anyone, please still send an email to preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu<mailto:preplabstaff at lists.osu.edu> so that we are aware you will be out.

In-Person and Online Training Items

As a reminder, all training items (including the title IX training) are paid time. Please be sure to include these in your timesheet.

Waste Tags

Please remember that the waste tags from the white cans need to be put into the bags in the yellow cabinet.

Ankles

Please remember that ankles must be completely covered while completing tasks in the labs. There is no flexibility with this policy.

Waste Sheets

We will be putting a silver basket in the windows on Monday. Please put completed waste sheets into this basket. The silver basket on the Daily sheet cabinet will now be only for completed readiness checklists.
