From weaver.646 at osu.edu Mon Oct 2 07:53:37 2023 From: weaver.646 at osu.edu (Weaver, Tyler) Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2023 11:53:37 +0000 Subject: [Preplabstudents] Week 7 Message-ID: Howdy Folks, Week 7 is here! [cid:image003.png at 01D9F2D4.D4967900] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. STO- the TA demo kits are on the reagent carts. IHT- the red IHT bins will be passed out from the window. The cups will need to be replenished between labs. SAL- Empty clear tubes will be on the reagent carts, the SAL solids will be picked up by the TAs. EMS- Extra lamps will be available in the window. GAS- each TA will pick up a large bag containing Alka-Seltzer, antacids, and small empty bags. Its ok for students to ask for an additional package of Alka-Seltzer for Part C. Other Important Information- Reagent Requests When calling downstairs (or sending a message in the GroupMe) for additional reagents, please be sure to indicate what concentration you need. This will help us send the reagent up more quickly. GroupMe The GroupMe is a great place to request reagents, spill kits, etc. It would be super helpful if the person running the supplies up, etc. replies to the original message so that we all know it has been resolved. Tasks Please remember that the daily sheet tasks are not the entirety of your duties while on the clock. The prep lab staff frequently also needs help completing tasks that are not scheduled for a particular time and you are expected to help when you are not completing a daily sheet task. Schedule I will be out Wednesday through Friday this week. We will follow our regular schedule on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week (the week of October 9th). The Prep Lab will be closed Thursday October 12th and Friday October 13th. Prep Lab Renovation Things are moving along! I have attached a couple of photos from Friday afternoon. To help orient yourself, the pink rectangles on the wall are the windows beside Linda?s desk. Report=Support Title IX Training Please remember that you need to complete the Title IX training by October 15th. https://osu.instructure.com/courses/49925/assignments/3505620 As always, please let us know if you have any questions! [cid:image002.png at 01D9FA20.E1D12D60] We will be following a slightly modified schedule on Tuesday (8:00am ? 10:00pm) and a heavily modified schedule on Wednesday (8:00am-3:30pm). You are expected to be present for your shifts or get them covered. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Daily Sheet will look different. Tasks will not be assigned to specific individuals, nor will they be assigned for specific times. Instead, when you arrive, you are expected to work for one hour on the current task, then take a break for 15 minutes. This will allow us to almost always have a group of people working to complete our list. The prep lab staff will not be present for all tasks as they will also be working on tasks that need to be completed during break. Please be sure to ask questions when you have them. Elford will be reinstalling the ceiling tiles on the first floor this week. Please be mindful of their equipment and assist them with accessing areas when requested. The prep lab will be closed on Thursday and Friday. I hope you all are able to take some time on those days to rest and recharge. Finally, mark your calendars! Our end of semester party will be on December 7th from 3:00-4:30 in McPherson 1015. Snacks and beverages will be provided. We usually have some four-legged attendees as well. We hope you were able to get some rest and relax a bit over fall break. Week 9 is just around the corner. We?ve only got four more weeks of lab left! [Image] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. CAR- TAs will be picking up glucose test strips from the windows. These are light and moisture sensitive. EMS- Extra lamps will be available in the window. SST- pH meters?Students and pH meters don?t always get along. pH meters with probes are on the reagent carts. If a student claims their pH meter is ?broken?, they should have their TA try to calibrate it before bringing it to the window for an exchange. Sophie and Alec will have replacements in the windows. ?Broken? meters should be placed in the labeled bin so that one of the prep lab staff can check them and make any necessary repairs. Extra wetting caps are available in each window, these are the little bottles that the probe tips are stored in. We also have extra storage solution, the liquid that goes into the wetting cap, in each window if needed. XUF Day 1- Pennies are in the window. Alec and Sophie moved a large instrument into Hood A of 330 for XUF Day 2. It includes a tank of acetylene. While the instrument is in this hood, the orange bucket will temporarily be placed under the hood. SYN Day 1- Ice will be needed. Please fill a cooler from the ice machine on the second floor. Other Important Information- Students Checking Items Out From the Window As a reminder, students do not need to check anything out from the windows. Everything they need should be on the reagent cart. They may need to look on the top and bottom. It?s easy to miss equipment when there is a lot going on- so please help the TAs when necessary. Unknowns [A white card with red text and symbols Description automatically generated] We have made some adjustments to the placement of unknowns in the windows. They are now on dedicated shelves and the labeling on the bins has been upgraded to be clearer and include basic safety information. Please keep the bins on the designated shelves so that everyone can locate them easily. Let us know when a bin is starting to get low so that we have adequate time to get another from Evans. Security Please be sure if you are the last person to leave a space, you close and lock the door behind you. We had an issue on Tuesday with doors in Evans left open with nobody around. Additionally, we will no longer be propping the door from 150 CE into the hallway open, nor will we be unlocking the door to 140 CE. Someone will need to enter 160 CE and open one of the other doors to move in carts. Segregation of Incompatible Substances- Carboys If you?ve looked closely in Evans, and the prep lab before we moved, you will have noticed that all our chemicals are stored in groups with similar properties: acids, bases, oxidizers, inorganic acids, organic acids, poisons, flammables, etc. A similar logic is used for storing our stock carboys. We have added colored tape to the lids of the carboys to help distinguish our five groups of carboys: bases, acids, oxidizers, flammables, and ?benign?. Until we move back into 130 Celeste, the oxidizers and benign carboys can be stored together. If see you something out of place, please say something. GroupMe Replies The GroupMe is a great place to request reagents, spill kits, etc. The person running the supplies up, etc. should reply to the original message so that we all know it has been resolved. Report=Support Title IX Training Please remember that you need to complete the Title IX training by October 15th. Time spent completing this training should be included in your timesheet. https://osu.instructure.com/courses/49925/assignments/3505620 As always, please let us know if you have any questions! It?s going to be a VERY busy week with PPG, QUL, WST, and XUF Day 2 happening all in the same week. It?s super important that everyone is present for their scheduled shifts. We would also love to have some extra hands around. If you are interested in adding some hours for next week, please let me know. [cid:image002.png at 01DA0142.592DBD10] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. PPG/QUL- We?re expecting to go through more than 100,000 test tubes and small corks this week. The new rooms all have a significant stash of corks and test tubes behind their white boards. The old rooms will need to obtain more from the window. If the window start to get low on either of these items, please call/text for more so that we are ready to go. As Alec mentioned on Friday, please do not give out the entire plastic box of unknowns. For PPG, each TA will get one small box of PPG-W unknowns, and one small box of PPG-B unknowns. For QUL, each TA only get one box of QUL unknowns. WST- pH meters again?Students and pH meters don?t always get along. pH meters with probes are on the reagent carts. It includes a tank of acetylene. While the instrument is in this hood, the orange bucket will temporarily be placed under the hood. SYN Day 2- Ice will be needed. Please fill a cooler from the ice machine on the second floor. Other Important Information- 130 CE Epoxy Floor The epoxy flooring will be installed in our new lab this week. They?re going to try their best to mitigate the odor but be prepared for a solvent-like smell for at least part of the week. Anyone in Celeste during the first part of April in 2022 may recall this smell. If you need a break from the odor, please feel free to step outside for some fresh air. Piles of Items in the Windows Please do not add things to the window cart, nor make a pile of items on the table inside the roller window. Items that are not on the window cart are deemed too fragile, too expensive, or not abundant enough for students (or random people that walk by) to grab them whenever they?d like. Missed Daily Sheet Tasks We?ve missed some of the Daily Sheet tasks in the last couple of weeks. Please complete them. If you have questions or need help, please ask any of the prep lab staff. Let?s do this! [cid:image003.png at 01DA067B.B53A1E80] Experiment Notes-Refer to the window notes for additional details. SGR- The students will need to use a carboy of distilled water for this one- please check the level in the carboy when you are doing your readiness checks. GAS- Tubs are on the bottom of the reagent carts. Extra Alka-Seltzer will be available in each window. BLP- There are three unknowns per TA: one green liquid in the falcon tubes, packaged solids in a black bag, and packaged solids in a clear colorless bag. Other Important Information- Schedule Planning Our normal shifts will continue through December 5th. December 6th is reading day- we will have food and such in 1015 McPherson lab at 3:00pm. All undergraduate student employees will be required to work a minimum of 4 hours during finals week. A signup will be sent out closer to that time. Refills I?m happy to see that everyone is following our refilling policy, refills only happen when you are told to do so. If after completing a cart check, you notice there are very few filled bottles remaining- let one of the staff know. Leaving the prep lab? If there is a potential that you may not be coming back to the prep lab for spring 2024, please let me know. I need to start determining if we need to hire additional students. We?re in the home stretch, let?s finish strong!
