We are very excited to start spring semester next week! I have included several nuggets of important information below. This message is a bit long, but it?s worth taking the time to read. Schedule We will start our normal schedule on the 9th. The schedule is now available on Teams and will be updated as necessary. A help article is available here. Hours All of you will need to complete some online training tasks. These should be included on your timesheet, and do not have to be done while physically here. Information about entering time in Workday can be found in this guide. Returning students wishing to get a few hours in this week are welcome to drop by. We will be open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm this week. PPE & Other Materials We will be providing everyone with a printed copy of the prep lab student employee guidebook. Returning students will not get a new binder, just the filler paper. Everyone will get a fresh lab coat and will have the option for a new pair of goggles. Training As I mentioned above, you all will have some online and in-person training to complete. Our goal is to have all of this completed by 11:59 pm on February 15th. Again, you do not need to be physically present to complete online training and it should be logged on your timesheet. Lots of things have changed, and we want to be sure everyone is updated. These will tell you exactly what you need to hand out, what the waste plan is, and other special info for each experiment. Lab Attire Remember that your shoes should have a covered toe and heel area. For this reason, slippers are not an approved lab footwear item. Leggings and shorts are not permitted unless they are covered by sweatpants or scrub pants. Let me know if you have any questions. Please remember that PPE infractions result in corrective action points. NaOH and White Can Runs Starting in Week 3, we will be combining NaOH and White can runs into one task on the daily sheet. This should help with efficiency. The white cans are already kept on the top of a large cart. You can place a tub of NaOH on the bottom and tackle both tasks in one trip. It?s on the other side of the wall behind Linda?s desk. This should be the door used when you are wearing a lab coat or have chemicals. Handwashing Be sure to wash your hands after completing a lab task. Handwashing can also help to prevent illnesses and the spread of infections to others. Experiment CPC CPC is a unique experience for everyone involved :) When working in the window, you will need to refill the ice in the water buckets every 30 minutes. The easiest way to do this is by setting a timer for 30 minutes. When it goes off grab the ice refill beaker, scoop up some ice from the cooler in the hall, and dump it into the bucket in the sink. You should also check the liquid level in the heating flask. If it?s less than half full, remove the receiving flask and empty it into the heating flask. Restart the timer when you return to the window. Please ask for help if you are unsure of anything. Next week should be a bit calmer with SCM and SHM not requiring chemicals. Today?s email is long, but I want to be sure we are all on the same page about several items. Walkie Talkies (Radios) It sounds like there is some confusion on how to operate the walkie talkies. They are already set on the correct channel. To use it, turn it on by rotating the knob on the top. Press the button with an ?H? on the left side (second from the top) and speak. Release the button when you are done speaking. Please let us know if you need any additional assistance with these. FPD We?ll be starting Experiment FPD next week. Students will exchange their BUCK-ID or driver?s license at the window for a freezing point apparatus. Place their ID in the slot you obtained the apparatus from. Each apparatus has a number that corresponds to the slot it?s stored in. This helps to get the correct ID back to the correct student. Note: we DO NOT accept credit or debit cards in exchange for equipment. If they don?t have anything to trade, let one of the prep lab staff know. Gathers and Cart Checks Please remember that a cart check gather requires you to only gather the items with a *. After completing a cart check, please reshelve the containers you brought down. Refilling will be done as needed under the supervision of a prep lab staff member. Waste on Fridays As we mentioned during your in-person waste training, we remove all waste from the upstairs labs on Friday evenings. There usually isn?t time to dump it on Friday, so it is perfectly acceptable to leave the glass buckets near the west hood, and the white cans on the cart so that they can be dumped on Monday. Please leave a note on the daily sheet board when waste needs to be dumped on Mondays. Security Be sure when you are done dumping the white cans the door is closed behind you. Leaving the back door open is a serious security risk. Guidebook Everyone has been provided with a copy of guidebook. You have all certified that you have read it. When you are unsure about a task you have been assigned on the Daily Sheet, please look for the appropriate section in the guidebook and review the necessary details. You can always ask questions, but please be sure you have taken the time to read through the information we have provided to you. Time spent reading the guidebook is paid time. Metal Salts Waste Barrel Gauge The yellow and orange float we have been using the metal salts waste barrel has not been very reliable. We have replaced with a digital gauge. The cutoff volume for the barrels is 180 L. Before dumping the white cans, press the white button on the gauge to see the current barrel volume. Press the button as needed to refresh the volume reading. Tyler?s Schedule As some of you may know, my son is due in early February. I will be on leave for a majority of the month of February to care for and bond with him and my wife. During this time, my duties will be delegated to several individuals.
