We will start training on August 14th and it will run through August 21st. Everyone, new and returning employees, will be expected to complete all parts of the training. Things went pretty well! I wanted to pass along a few notes and reminders: Locking/Unlocking * If you are assigned to unlock labs at the start of the day, please also unlock the window on the assigned floor. * Note: currently 210, 310, 220, 320, and the second floor window have temporary lock cores that are opened by the construction core keys (#4 and #13 in Keyth) either key will open all these doors. * When assigned to unlock/lock doors and complete a lab readiness check, first unlock all doors so that everyone can start to get settled in, then start your checks. * When you are done with a lab readiness checklist, please put it in the silver basket on the top of the gather sheet cabinet. Window Shifts * It?s super helpful to make a stack of materials for each class that will be happening nest. If you do this, when the TA shows up you can just hand them the stack of items and they can get started prepping their lab. This also give you a chance to see if anything is missing in advance. * Please be sure to walk around the floor at least once per session to clean up any goggle boxes that have fallen out of the trash. Handwashing Be sure to wash your hands after completing a lab task. Handwashing can also help to prevent illnesses and the spread of infections to others. Window Stuff We have officially completed our first week of lab. Up next is week 2. Things are going to start to get a bit complicated as the experiment being completed changes based on the day of the week. Each window has a master syllabus that shows which experiment is being completed by each course. It?s a good idea to reference this at the start of each window shift. [cid:image002.png at 01D9D910.CE1B73B0] Please do not change the window notes unless a staff member instructs you to do so. If you believe something is erroneous, please ask. Someone changed the VRM window notes to indicate that the flasks were being handed out from the windows. This was incorrect, as they should be provided on the carts. Experiment CPC CPC is a unique experience for everyone involved :) -Only the apparatus in the non-renovated rooms need to be disassembled. The distillation apparatus in the new rooms just need to be unplugged. -When an apparatus does need to be disassembled, do not break it down into more than 4 pieces (bucket with pump, heating mantle with distillation head, condenser with tubing, and receiving flask with vacuum take off). See the SOP for more info. The goal is to minimize how much gets taken apart so that it?s easier to put it back together again. Tubs should not be necessary, as everything can stay clamped to its ring stand. -Connections should be complete. The ground glass joints were not fully inserted into each other. -Ideally, the pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 5-10 minutes before the lab session starts. - The apparatus needs to be checked every 30 minutes by someone from the window. Set a timer for 30 minutes to remind yourself. When it goes off grab the ice refill beaker, scoop up some ice from the cooler in the hall, and dump it into the bucket in the sink. You should also check the liquid level in the heating flask. If it?s less than half full, remove the receiving flask and empty it into the heating flask. Restart the timer when you return to the window. - If you need your ice cooler refilled, call downstairs. We can get ice from the fourth floor of celeste and on the first floor of Evans. Second Floor Ice Machine Elford maybe installing the second floor ice machine this week. Please be mindful of this, as everyone navigates around the restroom area. This ice machine will be available for the students to use for lab ice. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANYONE CONSUME THE ICE FROM ANY ICE MACHINE IN CELESTE. Please keep asking questions!
