[Preplabstudents] Tuesday @2:20 in 310 & 320

Hello Everyone,

There was an incident this afternoon in 310 and 320 in which the 0.1 M copper (II) nitrate was not present after the cart check. This caused a delay in the students being able to complete their experiment. It seems in this situation there were multiple contributing factors:


  1.  The individuals doing the cart check were swapping individual bottles instead of the entire bin.

preventative measure: For experiments that use several reagents, and the reagents are all contained in a small bin or bucket, the whole bucket/bin should be swapped. Essentially, when doing a cart change for QUL, all bottles should be put back in the bin, and a new bin is swapped for the old one.

  1.  The TAs in these rooms did not notify the appropriate people in a timely manner.

preventative measure: TA’s could be reminded to notify their Head TA, the window, or an ALS of missing or incorrect materials as soon as possible.

I would like to reiterate that in the Prep Lab our goal is not to have a zero defects operation, this is unrealistic. Our goal is to prevent issues from reaching the students, and to respond to them as quickly as possible to avoid delay.
