[Preplabstudents] CPC

Hi All,

I wanted to send a note about CPC. It’s a tough one, and I want to be sure we are all on the same page.

Part B- each TA should receive a big bag that contains 6 small bags of spheres.

I have attached the CPC Distillation Apparatus Standard Operating Procedure for reference.

Reminders:
-Do not take ring stands out of rooms that have a “ring stand needs to stay in xxx” sticker. These ring stands live in those rooms. (Three were removed this afternoon.)
-Do not disassemble the distillation apparatus into more than 4 pieces (bucket with pump, heating mantle with distillation head, condenser with tubing, and receiving flask with vacuum take off). See the SOP for more info. The goal is to minimize how much gets taken apart so that it’s easier to put it back together again. Tubs should not be necessary, as everything can stay clamped to its ring stand.
-Connections should be complete. There was a setup this afternoon on which the ground glass joints were not fully inserted into each other.
-Ideally, the pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 5-10 minutes before the lab session starts.

Helpful Nuggets:
- The apparatus needs to be checked every 30-45 minutes. There are timers in each window in front of the desk. Set it for about 40 mins and it will remind you when to check the setups.
                - Add a half beaker of ice and refill the heating flask as needed.
- If you need your ice cooler refilled, call downstairs, put the cooler in the elevator, someone downstairs will refill it and put it back in the elevator to return.
