Message-ID: Hello Everyone, Next week we will begin our Prep Lab Training. I know some of you have reached out about missing some or all of our training. We will make up missed sessions when you return. I have attached a schedule for next week. We will begin around noon on Monday with the distribution of lab coats and goggles from 145 Celeste Lab. After that we will attend a safety discussion with Dr. Amy Moore, our Department Safety Coordinator. I encourage you to ask any questions you may have during this session; Dr. Moore is an excellent resource! I encourage you to use some of the down time next week to work on the mandatory online training modules. The time spent in training (in person) and completing online training modules (regardless of where you complete them) is paid time, and should be logged on your timesheet. Training information can be accessed in the modules area of the Prep Lab Forum on Carmen. I was very pleased last week with how quickly everyone settled in. Keep up the good work! Please read the following information in its entirety. General * Have you joined the Prep Lab GroupMe? If not, please use the following link to do so: go.osu.edu/preplabgroupme * A ?CART CHECK GATHER? involves just collecting the materials needed for a cart check * A ?CART CHECK? involves using the gathered materials to complete the cart check in the second and third floor labs. * There are still a few of you that need to complete training or just need to sign off on your paper log/ upload things to Carmen. Please get this finished up this week. * I still have a need for additional people during the following timeslots: * Tuesday 6:00 pm -10:00 pm (1 person) * Wednesday 3:30 pm ? 6:00 pm (1 person) * Friday 7:30 am-12:00 pm (4 people) * Grad students, if you can make any of these times, we can adjust your schedule. * Undergrads, you can add more hours as long as you can handle it, and do not go over 28 hours total for all on-campus jobs. Windows * Put the gray window supply cart out in the hall in the mornings and pull it back into the window when closing. * There is a new white three tier cart outside of each window for window worker food and beverages. Do not bring food and beverages into the window. * Be sure cart moves are completed at the scheduled time. Information on how to do a cart move is in your guidebook. * We now have spiral bound copies of the 1110, 1220, 1610, and 1910H lab manuals, please hand these out this week to the TAs as needed. We hope 1210 will be in soon. CPC * We start CPC tomorrow. * Students in the window should be checking the CPC distillation apparatus every 30-45 mins. * Add a full scoop of ice to the small water bucket * Make sure the heating flask is at least ? full. * If more liquid is needed, the contents of the receiving flask are dumped into the two-neck flask by carefully removing the ground glass stopper. * Talk with a prep lab staff member if you have any questions or need help. * The distillation apparatus will be removed from the old rooms when non-1210 classes are meeting. * The distillation apparatus should be unplugged at the end of lab. SOL * Hot Plates must be unplugged at the end of the session, they can be left in the hood. It?s a tough one, and I want to be sure we are all on the same page. Part B- each TA should receive a big bag that contains 6 small bags of spheres. I have attached the CPC Distillation Apparatus Standard Operating Procedure for reference. Reminders: -Do not take ring stands out of rooms that have a ?ring stand needs to stay in xxx? sticker. These ring stands live in those rooms. (Three were removed this afternoon.) -Do not disassemble the distillation apparatus into more than 4 pieces (bucket with pump, heating mantle with distillation head, condenser with tubing, and receiving flask with vacuum take off). See the SOP for more info. The goal is to minimize how much gets taken apart so that it?s easier to put it back together again. Tubs should not be necessary, as everything can stay clamped to its ring stand. -Connections should be complete. There was a setup this afternoon on which the ground glass joints were not fully inserted into each other. -Ideally, the pump and heating mantle should be plugged in and turned on about 5-10 minutes before the lab session starts. Helpful Nuggets: - The apparatus needs to be checked every 30-45 minutes. There are timers in each window in front of the desk. Set it for about 40 mins and it will remind you when to check the setups. - Add a half beaker of ice and refill the heating flask as needed. - If you need your ice cooler refilled, call downstairs, put the cooler in the elevator, someone downstairs will refill it and put it back in the elevator to return.
