I would like to join Michael in thanking Brian for four great years as chair as well as thank Michael for standing for election with me and accepting the nomination as chair.

Hi Everyone,

I would like to thank all of you for your support and vote of confidence. In particular, I would like to thank Ralf. He embodies the dedication to service that is integral to our department’s success.

I am truly grateful to Brian and would like to thank him for doing such an amazing job as chair. He has put the department in a great position and I am excited to build off all of his work. I will work with Brian over the next 8 weeks to facilitate a smooth transition.

It is both an honor and very humbling to serve all of you as the next Chair. I know these times are very challenging and uncertain. However, I believe the choices we make in the coming year can position Physics to be stronger than we were before Covid-19.

I am looking forward to working with all of you! I hope you all are staying safe and healthy.

    Dear all,

     I want to thank both Michael and Ralf for being willing to be considered for Chair.  It takes a certain amount of courage to put yourself forward for such a position; both were excellent candidates.  I’m glad we have identified the next person.  We face some critical decisions and tough choices in the coming months.  I will be working closely with Michael to bring him up to speed. Michael will be starting in this position at a very interesting time in both the department’s and university’s history.  He has my full confidence and support.  I ask that everyone in the department rally behind him as he leads us through uncharted territory.

Dear Department of Physics Faculty, Staff and Students,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Poirier as Chair of the Department of Physics effective July 1, 2020.

I would like to thank the Chair Search Committee – John Freudenstein as chair, Antonio Boveia, Linda Carpenter, Amy Connolly, Phil Davids, Dan Gauthier, Sabine Jeschonnek, and Alexandra Landsman – for their excellent work in handling the search process. I also wish to thank all of you for being highly engaged in this critical process, and for being willing to share your vision and plans for the future of the department.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to Brian Winer, whose appointment as Chair will come to an end on June 30, for his many years of exemplary leadership and service to the department.

The entire ASC leadership looks forward to the next chapter of the department’s evolution with Prof. Poirier as Chair.
