FW: Visa Changes for Scholars from China

FYI on an issue of potentially broad importance.

These documents are hard to parse --- the first because of the legalese, and the second because the speakers are being deliberately vague --- but they suggest that the fraction of students and postdocs affected would be small.  It is also suggested that the new rules would apply mostly to people who have not yet entered the U.S., but that is also unclear.

As usual with these kinds of changes, it’s hard to tell what they mean until we to see the results in particular cases.

In a recent proclamation, the White House stated its intent to begin limiting the kind of research that Chinese scholars will be able to pursue at US institutions.
