Dear members of the OSU physics and astronomy communities,
As part of the Strike4BlackLives/ShutDownSTEM/ShutDownAcademia movement on June 10 in support of the Black academic community, department(s) members crowd-sourced a resource document and created a list of actions that individuals and the departments should take. These documents are now available via the physics department website:
https://physics.osu.edu/aps-idea-osu
And the astronomy department website:
https://astronomy.osu.edu/local-access/inclusion-diversity-and-equity-alliance
These web pages also have links to other resources and information about the APS-IDEA network. Many thanks to Terry Bradley and Kirsten Casey for compiling documents, and to Ruth Leonard and Wayne Schlingman for editing the websites.
We plan to have a series of town halls in the near future to address the action items in these documents. We are still in the early planning stages; if you are interested in helping organize town halls, please let us know. I am excited that there has been so much engagement already. Most critically, we plan to have a town hall meeting during the first week of class on anti-Black racism in physics and actions we can do to combat it. We are aiming to have a town hall on the TEAM-UP report (https://www.aip.org/diversity-initiatives/team-up-task-force) in September. If you identify as BIPOC and want to communicate issues/concerns/thoughts about topics to be highlighted or how the event can be structured, please let us know. If anyone is interested in helping organize the first two events, please let us know. By “us”, I mean that you can contact anyone on APS-IDEA:
