Hi all,

This afternoon, new rules were announced by ICE (link copied below) that could have very serious impacts for international students who will enroll at universities this fall with fully online or hybrid courses. Thanks to everyone that brought this to our attention!

We are writing to let you know that many people and organizations at OSU and around the country are aware and extremely concerned about this, and are actively working to fully understand these rules and to organize a response to protect international students currently in the country, and those who plan to start their studies this fall.

We heard back from the OSU Office of International Affairs (OIA) that they are working with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to clarify some grey areas in the announcement, and they plan to make more information available by noon tomorrow. The Midwestern Physics Department Chair’s group has been actively discussing this, and has information that the APS is working on a campaign to help people contact their congressional representatives to express their concern and to prevent these rules from taking effect. Please be on the lookout for this email from APS (and other societies). The more of us that contact our representatives the better!

We will keep you informed as we learn more. Please take care of yourselves, and know that many people are working to prevent this from harming students and careers.

Regards,

Michael & Jon
