Please join us on Friday May 3, 11AM-12PM (1080 PRB) for a special seminar by Ming-Daw Tsai from Sinica Cryo-EM Center in Taiwan (and former OSU faculty).
Faculty Host: Prof. Dongping Zhong

New Horizon in Enzymology from Cryo-EM and X-ray Free-electron Laser (XFEL)

Ming-Daw Tsai, Institute of Biological Chemistry, Academia Sinica

Abstract

Structural determination of enzymes has been an integral part of mechanistic enzymology. However, the two common approaches, X-ray crystallography and NMR, can only be obtained at specific conditions, whereas mechanistic analysis often covers a broad range of conditions. These limitations are being overcome by two emerging structural biology techniques: Cryo-EM can facilitate structural determination at multiple solution conditions with various intermediate complexes, while XFEL allows determination of multiple intermediate structures at ultrashort time scale. This lecture will cover application of cryo-EM to the mechanism of ketol-acid reductoisomerase (KARI), and application of XFEL to the mechanism of a photolyase.

Ming-Daw Tsai is a former faculty of OSU (1981-2007) and director of CCIC (1993-2007). He is now director of Taiwan Protein Project and Academia Sinica Cryo-EM Center.
