   Dear all,

Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day! It is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to our world. This year’s theme is “Better the balance, better the world” ( #BalanceforBetter ). You can find more at the following website:

Our local departmental historian, Shelley Palmer, dug up a bit of history that may interest you. The first woman PhD at OSU Physics was Katherine M. Weimer, who received her PhD in 1943. Her advisor was Prof. Marion Llewellyn Pool and her thesis was entitled "Artificial Radioactivity of Barium and Lanthanum." Katherine spent twenty-nine years with the theory group at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. In 2001, the APS Division of Plasma Physics established the Katherine E. Weimer Award to "recognize and encourage outstanding achievement in plasma science research by a woman physicist in the early years of her career.”

An OSU woman led the way!
