Physics 8806.02
Condensed Matter Physics II

Instructor: Mohit Randeria (randeria.1 at osu.edu)

Class: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 09:35 – 10:55 am, Smith Lab 1064

This class is the continuation of condensed matter physics (CMP) I that I taught
last semester. It is the second part of a two-semester graduate-level introduction
to CMP aimed at both experimentalists and theorists.

Prerequisites: I will assume that the students have mastered the material in CMP I
including: Crystal structures and reciprocal space, Lattice vibrations and phonons,
Electronic structure and bands, Metals and Fermi surfaces, Semiclassical transport,
and Semiconductors

Syllabus: An introduction to the following topics:

  1. Berry phase effects in solids
  2. Integer quantum Hall effect
  3. Topological Insulators and semimetals
  4. Interacting electrons
  5. Magnetism
  6. Superconductivity

We will continue to use as our text book “Modern Condensed Matter Physics”
by Steven M. Girvin and Kun Yang, (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2019)
[ISBN-10: 110713739X; ISBN-13: 978-1107137394].

Home Work Assignments will be assigned on a regular basis throughout the semester.
Term paper topics, requirements and deadlines will be discussed in class. There will be no exams.
