Dear all,

In the upcoming semester, I will teach a special topics (8820) course “Introduction to Spintronics and Nanoscale Magnetism”, which meets WF 9:35 - 10:55 am.

This course will help students efficiently learn about basic concepts and recent research in spintronics and magnetism. I will focus more on intuition and less on rigor, at a level appropriate for experimentalists. The topics covered include basics of magnetism, vertical and lateral spin transport devices, electron spin dynamics, spin-orbit coupling and spin relaxation, 2D materials, 2D magnetism, spin proximity effects, Berry curvature and topological phenomena (spin Hall, anomalous Hall, quantum spin Hall, quantum anomalous Hall, etc), spin-torque and magnetization dynamics, and skyrmions.

To minimize the workload, there will be no required homework or term papers, but there will be exams.

Cheers,

Roland Kawakami
