Recent Phishing/Spam emails to Physics Listservs

Hello All,

We’re seeing some phishing messages from a compromised OSU account. The subject lines look legit, and indeed are subject lines from old Physics dept emails, but the content of the message says “Cannot show this email” and then asks you to click a link to view the message. Thankfully in this case I just saw, the link was malformed, therefore non-functional. This doesn’t change the fact that at a quick glance it was passable as real.

While we recently did modify a number of our listservs to reject non-OSU senders, we must all keep our eyes open for phishing attempts, even when coming from what appear to be trusted people at Ohio State.

A good, but not foolproof, way of validating things is to hover your mouse over email links, to see where the link actually leads. If it’s not going to a trusted site, don’t click!
You should also keep an eye out for poor spelling or grammar when the emails pose as official university correspondence.

Whenever you see suspected phishing messages, you can forward them to report-phish at osu.edu<mailto:report-phish at osu.edu> so that the email teams can be aware of the threat.
