PHYS 6802 - Introduction to Elementary Particle Physics

Dear All,

I'd like to announce a class that I will teaching next semester, PHYS 6802 - Introduction to Elementary Particle Physics. The course is open to advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It assumes no prior knowledge of particle physics and will cover the following:

Symmetries and group theory, relativistic QM, particle detectors and experiments, Feynman diagrams, the particles of the SM and the gauge theories of their interactions — charged leptons, photons, and QED; gluons, quarks, and the strong force (QCD); neutrinos, W/Z bosons and the weak force; the Higgs boson and the Higgs mechanism.

We will make use of current research at CERN’s LHC throughout the course to illustrate these concepts.

We will probably use a new book, “Concepts of Elementary Particle Physics” by Micheal E. Peskin (SLAC), which the author has kindly made available as a free pdf at http://www.slac.stanford.edu/~mpeskin/Physics152/theBook.pdf

Grades will determined by 4 HW assignments (60%) and final (40%). The prerequisites for the course are familiarity with relativistic kinematics and non-relativistic QM.
