54th Alpheus Smith Lecture

   Dear all,

     Yesterday the department hosted Art McDonald for the 54th Alpheus
Smith Lecture.  It was a very successive event!  It requires substantial
time and effort to make such an event work.  I want to thank all of you who
participated in the event and made Art's visit memorable.  I would like to
draw special attention to a number of individuals who played large roles.
First, Zeke Johnston-Halperin, Chair of the Colloquium Committee that
selected Art, shuttled Art around during the day and acted as general host.
John Beacom also stepped in and helped in a similar capacity.  Terry
Bradley and Bryan Dunlap prepared the AV equipment in Independence Hall and
verified the presentation displayed properly ahead of time.  The system
worked flawlessly.  Mark Reed made sure that Independence Hall was in
pristine condition before our guests arrived.  Kris Dunlap and Brad Hefner
monitored the doors to make sure our guests found their way to the
reception.  Finally, there is Shelley Palmer. It is difficult to even begin
to list what she did for this event.  So I will simply say that she was
amazing.  I apologize if I have forgotten anyone. The whole event was truly
a team effort.
