Dear Faculty and Staff,

I want to bring to your attention that Wednesday March 8th is
International Women’s Day. This is an opportunity to celebrate the
accomplishments of women and recognize the challenges they face in our
society. As part of this day, there is a movement, A Day Without a Woman,
that is asking women to be absent from work for the day. Some members of
the Physics Community may seek to participate in this peaceful protest. I
am requesting that all participants follow the departmental procedures for
seeking a leave from their duties. I am also requesting that faculty and
staff supervisors work to find ways to cover the duties of those absent. I
separate message was sent to the graduate students requesting them to
follow appropriate procedures as GTA or GRAs.

This occasion presents an opportunity for open dialogue about the
importance of the role of women and the challenges they face in our
department and in the workforce in general. These discussions can serve to
both raise awareness and improve understanding. I hope this event can
proceed in such a way that we can all find it beneficial.

  Brian
