Physics Machine Shop

   Dear Colleagues,

     I wanted to give you a quick update on developments with the Physics
Machine Shop.  Rapid progress has been made over the last several days.
The Joint Chem-Physics Shops committee has put together a recommendation
for how to proceed given the critical shortage of manpower in the Physics
Department Machine Shop.  This tentative plan was presented to Dean Hadad
on Friday and his response was very positive.

    While the plan still requires some understanding of details, it will
make additional manpower available for Physics projects.  The plan has this
manpower coming from a combination of Chemistry department machinists and a
new hire. As the plan comes into final focus I will update you with those
details.

    As we go through this transition, I urge you to coordinate your
projects and their timelines with Phil.

I want to thank Phil Davids and the Joint Committee (Phys reps: Durkin,
Gupta, and Schumacher) for their efforts.  I will also mention that our
colleagues in Chemistry have been very receptive to our needs.
