Hi Michael,

Thanks for spreading the word.
I agree that these are scary times. However, I am much more optimistic about the future of this country after seeing the nationwide protests against the ban.
The protesters have proved that America is already great.

HI Everyone,

I just wanted to forward an email from our Chemistry colleague, Chris Jaroniec. See below

I co-advise Mohammad on a joint funded NIH project. Mohammad is a truly outstanding student.

Mohammad and his wife were directly impacted by Trump’s executive order this past week.

It appears that OSU worked very hard to help them and Mohammad’s wife was eventually able to enter the US on her F-2 visa.

These are very scary times.

Michael

Subject: update on Mohammad Zandian

Dear Colleagues,

Some of you may have heard by now via various media outlets of the ordeal that my graduate student, Mohammad Zandian, and his wife, Parisa, who are both from Iran have been through over the past several days. After more than a year of applications and interviews Parisa was finally able to obtain an F-2 visa to join Mohammad here and was en route to the US just as Trump’s executive order took effect on Friday. She was detained at JFK upon arrival and at one point was in danger of being deported back to Iran, until the last minute court ruling barring the deportations took effect leaving her in custody at JFK.

Thanks to the immediate help of OSU administrators, including President Drake, Provost McPheron and others, who worked behind the scenes with both of our senators and numerous other elected and DHS officials, Parisa was finally granted an interview by DHS and released from detention yesterday early afternoon and she and Mohammad have arrived safely in Columbus today.

I also would like to thank Susan for assisting the Provost in these efforts, Tom and Terry for helping out with the logistics of finding TA substitutes for Mohammad in the last minute, as well as those of you who have independently contacted elected officials about this situation. In difficult times such as these, it’s very comforting to know that one can count on friends and colleagues to offer help and support.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that some newly found friends from the English department have set up an online site to collect donations for Parisa and Mohammad to warmly welcome them to the OSU community:

https://www.generosity.com/education-fundraising/welcome-parisa-fasihianifard-to-buckeye-nation/x/15050952

While no amount of money can really compensate Parisa and Mohammad for the stress and uncertainty that they have had to endure over the past several days, it is a nice gesture from the university community that can also help them offset additional expenses they incurred as a result of this very sad and humiliating situation. If you would like to pitch in with a donation of any kind, please feel free to do so, although this is by no means expected. The site will remain open till the end of this week and I plan to transmit all the collected funds to Parisa and Mohammad sometime this weekend or early next week.

All the best,
Chris
