An act of significant vandalism to the Physics Research Building occurred in the late evening of December 29th nominally at or around 11:00 pm.

Hallway safety showers on the fourth floor and third floor lab side central corridor were activated and left running for a period of time resulting in flooding of the adjacent areas.

Water seepage from these flooded areas penetrated to the second floor in some limited amount near the restrooms and east-west corridor with ceiling tile damage present.

In addition to activating the hallway safety showers, the individual also activated the fire alarm and removed a fire extinguisher from the second floor south stairway and threw it down the stairwell.

FOD custodial staff witnessed the individual leaving the building and reported to the police who quickly responded to the call.

Police and a research staff member from the department shut off the safety showers and performed a building wide assessment to verify all showers were no longer flowing.

FOD custodial staff completed a water pick-up campaign and the majority of flooding was removed from the hallways and from some areas of labs where water passed under the doors by 12:45 am.

Lab side occupants are asked to check their work areas for residual water and report any equipment or facility damage.

Special emphasis should be paid to the following areas where known flooding occurred:

Fourth Floor:
- Corridor X416C running north and south near labs 4135 to 4121. A large group of lab equipment and related items stored in the hallway here have visible water saturation of boxes.

Third Floor:
- Corridor X316C running north and south and corridor X320C running east and west near labs 3131 to 3115 and labs 3105 to 3109. A large amount of water was removed from lab 3105 and 3109 and 3177.
- Carpet in the south bridge and interactive space areas is very wet.

Second Floor:
- Corridor X215C running east and west near lab 2105. Seepage from 3rd floor saturated and collapsed a ceiling tile in the hallway in this area.

First Floor:
- No flooding found in initial inspections

Basement:
- No flooding found in initial inspections

An arrest of a suspected individual has been made and a police report has been filed.

The Department expresses significant thanks to the FOD Custodial staff and OSU Police for a very rapid response and mitigation of a serious condition.

The Department also expresses significant thanks to the research staff member who initially identified flooding, took immediate action to assist police with shutting off of showers, and helped coordinate clean-up.
