Title: Semi-classical perspective to High Harmonic Spectroscopy

Abstract: In this presentation, we will introduce classical and semi-classical models for electron dynamics in strong-field physics. In particular, we will discuss their application to High Harmonic Generation (HHG) and Spectroscopy (HHS). First, we will consider the Classical Trajectory Monte-Carlo (CTMC) technique which models the ionized electron dynamics with an ensemble of randomly initialized classical trajectories. The trajectory picture of the CTMC offers an intuitive perspective and easy numerical simulations that account fully for the long range interactions with the parent ion. Then we will introduce a semi-classical wavefunction (SCWF) model that couples the trajectory (particle) perspective to quantum (wave) features. From the SCWF we discuss how the HHG spectrum can be factorized into the product of the individual cross sections of the processes leading to HHG. Such a factorization brings a great reduction to the complexity of HHG simulations and offers perspectives to tackle complex (molecular) systems otherwise unreachable with standard ab initio quantum simulations. In particular, in the conclusion we will discuss the projects for applying such (semi-) classical models to study charge migration through high harmonic spectroscopy. This project is a joint effort with the Ultra-fast Atomic Physics Research Group of the Ohio State University for the experimental side.
