A message from the Chief Wellness Officer
Hi Everyone,
We are into winter blues right now, with many people suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is the onset of depression during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight. The depression generally lifts during spring and summer.
SAD may be effectively treated with light therapy, but only half of those with SAD do not get better with light therapy alone. Antidepressant medication and psychotherapy can help to reduce symptoms, either alone or in combination with light therapy (Remember, most people with mental health issues do not get any treatment).
Some tips to help your colleagues beat the blues in the winter include:
* Engage in regular physical activity
* Break your routine if rutted
* Eat healthy: light and often; avoid "junk food"
* Manage your energy: build in recovery breaks throughout the day; sit less; stand more
* Get enough sleep (at least 7 hours)
* Think positive because how you think affects how you feel and how you behave
* Balance work and personal life: take time to enjoy things you like to do
* Read 5 to 10 minutes every morning in a positive book
* Have your Vitamin D level checked
* Socialize regularly with family/friends
* Have an attitude of gratitude: write down the things for which you are grateful
* Laugh more often
Let's keep focused on helping our colleagues to make just 1 positive healthy lifestyle behavior change in the next 30 days!
Please also note that I have created a new university-wide health and wellness fund (# 315015), which you can donate to as part of Campus Campaign that officially launches on March 1. A substantial portion of these funds will go to our Wellness Innovators to further help you facilitate a culture of health and wellness in your colleges and units.

Get Pumped Up About Heart Health Lunch & Learn
Friday, Feb. 27, noon-1 p.m., Ross Heart Hospital auditorium or via webinar
Scott Lilly, MD, interventional cardiologist and assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, will give a dynamic presentation about the most common cardiovascular conditions among Americans, the importance of "knowing your numbers" and the simple changes you can make to achieve a healthy heart.
Healthy lunches and beverages will be provided. Free chair massages and a limited number of biometric screenings will be available from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Ross Heart Hospital auditorium lobby.

Indoor Wellness Walk

Grab a friend and join us for our indoor wellness walk. This is a great opportunity to explore the tunnels underneath the NEW James and add some extra steps to your work day. We recommend bringing a light jacket if you are concerned about the temperature in the tunnels.

Guided Imagery Training for Healthcare Professionals
Effectively trained healthcare professionals can use guided imagery to help patients relieve stress, sleep better, feel more comfortable, and change habits.
The course, led by Partice Rancour, MS, RN, PMHCNS-BC, behavioral and mental health specialist, is offered in two sessions on Tuesdays April 14th and May 5th from 8:00-11:00am at the OSU Integrative Medicine Clinic.
