To all,

I am forwarding the attached email from John Beacom to those of you that might also have known Mr. Price, but aren’t on the CCAPP list serve. A subsequent email mentioned that Lisa Colarosa was collecting cards to present to his wife at the services on Sunday. Lisa is the contact if you would like to send a card by mail as well.

Mr. Price was a regular visitor to our building and his presence will be missed by many of us.

Shelley

Subject: [CCAPP] sad news about Steve Price [includes new information]

[New information: (attached) obituary and (below in bold) plans on Sunday 7 December for a celebration of his life.]

Dear Colleagues,

I am sorry to report that Steve Price, a longtime friend of the Center for Cosmology and AstroParticle Physics (CCAPP) and of many of us individually, died on Wednesday 26 November 2014, following a massive heart attack. He had been thought to be in good health.

For the past several years, Steve was a frequent presence at events in CCAPP and the Departments of Astronomy and Physics. Just a week earlier, he attended the CCAPP Biard Lecture and met with the speaker afterwards. The following day, he was part of a small group listening to a student practicing a presentation. Along with attending Astronomy Coffee, this was a typical week for him.

He was a unique and wonderful person, and his contributions to our efforts were significant and enduring. His curiosity about the Universe was a constant reminder that we are fortunate to be researching such profound topics. His kindness to all, and especially students and postdocs, was a constant example of how to encourage the next generation of scientists. And his generosity was a constant and essential help in growing the collaborative culture and international visibility of CCAPP. We are grateful for all of these things.

Just this year, Steve and Jill Levy, his wife, finished endowing the Dr. Pliny A and Margaret H. Price Prize, named in honor of his parents. This prize is awarded to the best two graduate students worldwide working in cosmology and astroparticle physics. The winners visit CCAPP for a week, give a seminar, and are awarded an honorarium. Since 2009, we have hosted 10 fantastic young people as winners. More information is given at http://ccapp.osu.edu/priceprize.html. In addition, Steve and Jill provided support to construct the Price Place, a great meeting space that provides a focal point for CCAPP activities. Both of their donations enable future activities.

Steve will be missed, and we will remember and honor him. My condolences to all who knew him.

His “Celebration of Life” will be held at The Grange Audubon Center (505 W. Whittier St) on Sunday, December 7 from 2-5 PM. All are welcome.

With great sadness,
John
