Please join us this morning at 11:30am in the Smith Seminar room for the first Condensed Matter Experiment Seminar presented by Jonathan Morris, Helmholtz-Zentrum, Berlin.

"Race for the pole"

Magnetic monopoles, free magnetic charges, are long sought after entities in science. Independently in 2005 Ryzhkin [1] and in 2008 Castelnovo, Moessner and Sondhi [2] predicted that defects in a family of frustrated magnetic materials called "spin ice" could resemble magnetic charges. These predictions sparked interest in the experimental community and different experimental groups started to look for these defects. I will introduce spin ice, magnetic monopoles and describe our search for evidence of these defects [3].
