Speaker: David Kaplan - University of Washington

Date: Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Time: 4:00 PM

Place: The Robert Smith Seminar Room

Title: "Axions, the Anthropic Principle, and the Tilted Universe"

Abstract: The axion is a hypothetical particle, very light and weakly interacting, which is a consequence of a theory proposed in the late 1970's for why the neutron has vanishing electric dipole moment. The story of the axion threads its way through particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Its unique properties may require one to confront the anthropic principle and suggest we look for evidence of cosmic structure a million times farther away than our cosmic horizon.
