Please join us on Thursday, May 10th at 11:30am in the Smith Seminar Room for the CME Seminar presented by Art Hebard from the University of Florida.
"Disorder-tuned approach to critical behavior in thin-film ferromagnets "
Using an apparatus in which thin films can be deposited and then immediately transferred without exposure to air into an adjoining cryostat, results will be presented on the disorder-induced changes in conductivity and magnetic behavior of thin-film ferromagnets (Fe, Co, Gd and Mn). At low disorder strengths two distinct quantum corrections to the conductivity are found whereas at higher disorder strengths, films with a granular morphology (e.g., Fe, Co) can be described as "anomalous Hall insulators" in contrast to films with a more uniform morphology (e.g., Gd) which undergo a metal-insulator transition with well-defined critical exponents extracted from finite-temperature scaling theory.
Please contact me if you would like to meet with Dr. Hebard during his visit.
Thank you,
Trisch
