Emergency Microsoft Windows Patching on Thursday, August 15

Hello All,



The College is releasing emergency Windows Updates today, starting around 1pm. There exists a critical RDP vulnerability, important enough to justify an early release of what would otherwise be our normal 'Third Tuesday at 9pm' patches. Computers may ask to reboot. ASC Servers will be rebooted between 8pm and Midnight.

Computers with patching exceptions in place (scientific instrument computers) are not targeted, although we advise manually checking for updates on these if at all possible.



If you use remote desktop on a personally-owned computer, we advise you to check for updates there as well.



This applies to all current versions of Windows and Windows Server. These are intended to fix a newly discovered set of Remote Desktop worm vulnerabilities CVE-2019-1181<https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2019-1181>and CVE-2019-1182<https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2019-1182>, which are nicknamed DejaBlue. (It's aptly named because it feels like Déjà vu from the BlueKeep vulnerability we had not too long ago).
