Changes to Physics "U" Drives, Windows home directories

To all in Physics,

Important computing changes! We are in the process of moving user data to new servers. Changes will go into effect starting 8pm Tomorrow, Wednesday 1/3/2018.
This particular change will only affect Windows and Mac users with data on PHYPCS. This change will not affect Linux user data storage.

Description of changes:
For those familiar with "U" home drives, the location will be changing. No longer will the path be \\phypcs\name.n$<file:///\\phypcs\name.n$> or \\phypcs.asc.ohio-state.edu\name.n$<file:///\\phypcs.asc.ohio-state.edu\name.n$>
The new path will be \\files\physics\private\name.n<file:///\\files\physics\private\name.n> or \\files.asc.ohio-state.edu\physics\private\name.n<file:///\\files.asc.ohio-state.edu\physics\private\name.n>
This WILL NOT yet affect shared group drives or admin drives on \\phypcs<file:///\\phypcs> . Those will be moved in the near future, and I will make announcements when the time comes.

"What do I need to do?"
If you're using a University-owned and configured computer, you shouldn't need to make any changes. I am doing things behind the scenes which should automate this change for most people.
People who have mapped network drives on personally owned computers, or from within a local (non-ASC) account on a computer, will need to delete and recreate the mapping with the new folder path.

Possible points of failure:

  * The automated changeover may not be seamless in circumstances where a person's name.n has changed due to marriage, or in some cases where there are legacy non-name.n accounts in use that were carried over from the old physics domain.
  * There may be a delay in which data is present in the new location. I performed a bulk data copy from Dec 28th-29th, so it's possible that any files created or changed over the NYE weekend etc, may not be currently present in the new location. Just let me know and I'll be happy to sync your account folders to restore any data that wasn't copied automatically.

I apologize for any inconvenience. Please contact action at physics.osu.edu<mailto:action at physics.osu.edu> if you're not sure how this change will affect you, or if you have trouble logging into your computer, or trouble accessing any of your data.

Thanks!

Andrew
