Facing ever growing demands for consumer electronics and electric vehicles (EV to develop high-capacity energy storage devices. In these technologies, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have gained the greatest success based on its light weight, high voltage, and thereby high energy density. Therefore, LIBs have been selected as a main power source of EVs at present.
However, energy density of current LIB is not satisfactory, and many research groups are still exploring new battery materials that can deliver even higher energy and power. One of the example is LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) spinel cathode that offers high operating voltage (4.75 Vvs.Li), low material cost, and excellent power capability. The LNMO crystallizes into two different symmetries depending on the occurrence of disordering/ordering of Ni2+ and Mn4+ in the lattice.
In this talk, I will demonstrate crystal structure - composition - property relationship of the LNMO spinel for LIBs. Their interfacial reactions in LIBs and several improvement strategies will be introduced as well. Finally, I will present my research programs to develop next-generation energy storage devices.

After obtaining Ph.D in Materials Science & Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin (2009), He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2010. Then, he worked as a senior researcher at General Motors (GM) Global R&D Center in Warren Michigan from 2011 to 2016. His research interest includes energy storage and conversion materials and systems.
