Kim,

You did a great job working with Dr. Robinson and getting the informed consents revised. CoD is excited to incorporate this caries management approach into the curriculum.

Thanks for leading the way -

Cathy

Subject: [Pedfac] SDF at OSU/Coach

Update on SDF!

Thanks to Dr. Fonda Robinson and her speediness, SDF has been approved for use on the Coach and in OSU Pediatric Clinic - starting Monday, May 15. I wanted to share this great news at CIS, but was absent last week (/in Main OR). Many of the OSU students have been asking about its availability and now we won't have to send OSU students to NCH for this.

Key points:

1. Consent forms for Coach and Pedo Clinic have been modified to include SDF as a possible treatment. Verbal consent is always paramount, though, when applicable. Both locations will have the laminated photos we use to show parents and patients.

2. On Coach - attempt will be made to call parent on phone before using SDF. Student will document if successful or not.

3. On Coach - only will apply SDF on distal of canine and posterior. No black front teeth!

4. Students will never have access to the bottle. DAs on the Coach or in Pedo will dispense their one precious drop. This will minimize waste as well as possible mess. The DA will also dispense a small amount of fluoride foam as a taste cover-up.

5. Code D1354 has a $0 charge for the length of my Delta Dental grant, which has purchased the bottles for the 2 locations. Fee will adjust at a later date.

6. I created a new SDF half-sheet as take-home handout - the student will have to check a box as to the indication for SDF for that specific patient. The full-page handout still exists that you can give to interested parties. Both have been branded with OSU COD logos by OSU Marketing.

7. Follow up at Pedo will be 4-6 weeks (an appointment will be made), during an op appointment if applicable. Follow up for Coach will be based on the Coach's return to the school.

8. There is a paper tracking form (a la "SDF spreadsheet") that will be used until Linda Black can get it as a "Form" in Axium (few weeks). I am applying for an IRB for this data collection.

D4s got this info on Friday at their Community Day. D3s are getting this info this week in their lab course. Gretchen/Becky/Dorothy are in the know - ask G and B how SDF tastes :). I will make sure Drs. Kassoy and Hagman get acquainted with SDF as well as the new fellows during their orientation in June. I need to get out to the Coach once more.

Attached are the documents/forms the OSU students will use. Their protocol is very similar to ours, but with the above differences. As always, contact me if questions.

In SDF we trust.
Dr. Kim
